Location: Truro, Cornwall or UK remote working only with regular travel to Truro

Travel: Work away from home, this may be UK or overseas. Travel can include: deploying to support in-country programmes, business trips, attending/delivering training. You may be required to work away from home up to 30% of your time in any calendar year.

Who are we looking for

It is expected that the Supply Chain Specialist (SCS) will have previous experience in humanitarian supply, at international, regional or local level. The SCS is an enthusiastic team member and a creative problem-solver with a keen eye for detail. They see opportunities in challenges and have outstanding interpersonal skills. This role would be ideally suited to someone with HQ humanitarian and field experience, but who is looking for shorter programmatic deployments balanced by remote support. The individual should enjoy administration tasks, have a desire to be involved in multiple projects and work to a high degree of accuracy.

The Department has recently completed an operational review, which will form the basis of strategic and departmental changes for growth, building on a significant increase in programme size in 2023. The role will be starting at a time where ShelterBox is realigning itself for further growth in the face of mounting humanitarian needs and we therefore look forward to welcoming candidates who remain flexible and open to change.

This is pivotal time at ShelterBox and as we grow, keeping our Supply Chain Team at peak performance is crucial to delivering our mission of no family without shelter after disaster and The SCS will always work within the charity’s aims, objectives and values and comply with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Role purpose:

The Supply Chain Specialist (SCS) will be a core member of the busy and dynamic Supply Chain Team, within the International Programmes Directorate and will report to the Programme Supply Chain Manager. The SCS will work closely with the Supply Chain Managers, Regional Directors and Programme Managers and it is expected that the SCS will be assigned to work mainly on the Africa region (West & Central Africa / East & Southern Africa) although other regions and Countries may also require support.

The SCS will be involved in a variety of tasks and projects right across the supply chain from international and local scoping, tactical planning and strategic inventory management to negotiation, procurement and preparedness. The SCS will ultimately support ShelterBox aid recipients by coordinating humanitarian supply to deliver aid and assistance to disaster affected areas, both remotely and deployed.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Lead and coordinate the design of the supply chain to assigned programmes including; assessing supply options/routes, researching tax free importation procedures, developing last-mile supply routes, operational services and local procurement, third party procurement and cash to ensure timely responses
  • Responsible for tendering international freight requests to freight providers to ensure best value, service and accountability for movement of relief supplies. Including overseeing shipping of aid items by air, sea, road or rail and arranging the preparation and provision of relevant shipping documentation.
  • Be involved with the management of prepositioned inventory including monitoring appropriate inventory levels, managing tactical and strategic replenishments
  • Deploy to areas affected by disaster in a supply chain capacity to set up and oversee the timely delivery of aid items and assistance
  • On a roster, provide an out-of-hours first point of contact for deployed teams and emergencies
  • Establish, develop and lead on good supply chain relationships with freight forwarders, stock suppliers, other humanitarian actors, relevant government departments and logistics coordination mechanisms at both global and field levels
  • Contribute to delivering preparedness activities for existing programmes
  • Work with the International Programmes department to set up partnerships with other organisations;
  • Support ShelterBox to stay aware of trends, innovations and best practice in supply within the disaster relief sector and promote supply chain best practice within International Programmes
  • Contribute to driving forward changes to meet our sustainable supply chain targets e.g. significant reduction in carbon emissions
  • Identify, mitigate and record supply chain risk in emergency responses and escalate where required
  • Give regular briefings internally, and occasionally externally
  • Support with developing and delivering supply chain training
  • Maintain excellent information management of logistics systems including updating records to ensure accurate record keeping and accountability of aid assets for audit purposes
  • Promote and demonstrate humanitarian principles in all activities
  • Ensure adherence to ShelterBox procedures and policies including those relating to safeguarding, safety and security
  • Support departmental and organisational working groups and projects when required and any other duties as required which are deemed appropriate to the level and grade of the post.
