Location: Truro, Cornwall or UK remote working only (with regular travel to Truro)

Travel: Work away from home, this may be UK or overseas. Travel can include; deploying to support in-country programmes, business trips, attending/delivering training. You may be required to work away from home up to 50% of your time in any calendar year.

Who are we looking for?

It is expected that the Emergency Supply Chain Specialist will have previous experience in humanitarian supply, at international, regional and local level. The Emergency Supply Chain Specialist is an enthusiastic team member and a creative problem-solver with a keen eye for detail. They see opportunities in challenges and have outstanding interpersonal skills. This role would be ideally suited to someone with HQ humanitarian and field experience, but who is looking for shorter emergency deployments balanced by remote support of responses. The individual should enjoy administration tasks, have a desire to be involved in multiple projects and work to a high degree of accuracy.

The Department has recently completed an operational review, which will form the basis of strategic and departmental changes for growth, building on a significant increase in programme size in 2023. The role will be starting at a time where ShelterBox is realigning itself for further growth in the face of mounting humanitarian needs and we therefore look forward to welcoming candidates who remain flexible and open to change.

There is a requirement for the successful candidate to be available and to attend in person training in Cornwall on the following fixed dates: 27th – 31st March 2023.

Main role and responsibilities

This Emergency Supply Chain role will be a core member of the Supply Chain Team, within the International Programmes Directorate and will report to the Global Supply Chain Manager. This role will be closely embedded with the Emergency Response Team, which is responsible for assessing and responding to rapidly developing crises.

This role will support communities affected by disaster by leading and coordinating Supply Chain elements of ShelterBox’s humanitarian responses either in Countries impacted by crises or remotely. The Emergency Supply Chain Specialist, will design the supply chain following a sudden onset disaster, coordinate international, regional and local transportation, be responsible for procuring stock and services, partner section, last mile logistics and more. Outside of a disaster, tactical planning and preparedness activities are required, along with strategic inventory planning.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Lead and coordinate the design of the supply chain to assigned disasters including; assessing and selecting supply options/routes, researching tax free importation procedures, developing last-mile logistics, operational services and local procurement, third party procurement and cash to ensure high quality, timely responses.
  • Responsible for tendering emergency international freight requests to freight providers to ensure best value, service and accountability for movement of relief supplies. Including overseeing shipping of aid items by air, sea, road or rail and arranging the preparation and provision of relevant shipping documentation.
  • Deploy and be able to act as team lead, to areas affected by disaster in a supply chain capacity, to set up and oversee the timely delivery of aid items and assistance. Work away from home, this may be UK or overseas training or deployment to disaster affected areas. Whilst you are unlikely to respond for more than six weeks at any one time, you may be required to deploy for up to 50% of your time in any calendar year.
  • Provide supply chain HQ backstop support to emergency responses
  • Establish, coordinate with and draw upon good supply chain relationships with freight forwarders, stock suppliers, other humanitarian actors, relevant government departments and logistics coordination mechanisms at both global and field levels.
  • Responsible for proposing supply chain emergency response solutions and for inputting into decision making with supply chain managers
  • Identify, mitigate and record supply chain risk in emergency responses and escalate where required
  • Contribute to delivering Supply Chain emergency preparedness activities during times of non-response. Including; the Pacific and Latin America/Caribbean, as well as other locations as required
  • Work alongside the Global Supply Chain Manager to oversee emergency prepositioned inventory and ensure easy access to stock for emergencies.
  • Work with the emergency team to streamline supply chain systems and processes and enable more timely responses
  • Responsible for increasing emergency supply chain capacity including upskilling emergency team members, providing leadership and mentoring to Response team volunteers and surge capacity planning.
  • On a roster, provide an out-of-hours first point of contact for emergencies and deployed teams.
  • Contribute to driving forward changes to meet our sustainable supply chain targets such as significant reduction in carbon emissions
  • Give regular briefings internally, and occasionally externally
  • Maintain excellent information management of logistics systems, to ensure accurate record keeping and accountability of aid assets for audit purposes
  • Promote and demonstrate humanitarian principles in all activities
  • Ensure adherence to ShelterBox procedures and policies including those relating to safeguarding, safety and security
  • Any other duties as required which are deemed appropriate to the level and grade of the post.
