QUALITY CONTROL INSPECTOR

Summary/Objective

 

The Quality Control Inspector will provide quality assurance (QA) support – identifying defects, out of tolerance dimensional items, weld quality issues and locations, etc. and ensuring the material(s)/item(s) meets drawings and purchase order specifications.

 

Primary Responsibilities/Functions

  1. Collaborates with project managers, Purchasing Dept, and shop foreman to review the project’s design, manufacturing, and test documentation; ensures that project and company quality requirements are met.
  2. Identifies customer requirements in contractual specifications/documentation and ensures the project fulfills those requirements.
  3. Supports assigned project or operations team by providing quality analysis and expertise throughout the inspection and implementation process.
  4. Identifies root causes of problems in the production process; recommends and/or implements corrective measures.
  5. Self-perform quality control inspections of shop fabrication which includes fit-up, weld preparations and final welds, polishing finishes, dimensional criteria, mark number location etc.
  6. Record and maintain in-process and final inspection records for quality assurance and production control.
  7. Inform foreman and project managers and Purchasing Dept of defects of fabrication.
  8. Help and assist shop personnel and fab vendors with interpretation of drawings and specifications.
  9. Observe company safety policy while working.
  10. Perform dimensional inspections on materials and assemblies in accordance with our internal Quality Program.
  11. Perform final inspections on outgoing material prior to shipping.
  12. Continually improve the Quality Control processes and make recommendations to management to better manage overall quality.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills/Attributes

 

  1. 5 years minimum in QC Department for miscellaneous metals, structural steel, or curtain wall fabrication
  2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  3. Ability to read and interpret structural steel drawings, shop drawings and architectural drawings and specifications, and weld symbols
  4. Knowledge of AWS and AICS codes applicable to steel fabrication and erection
  5. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  6. Extensive knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn production processes
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to serve as a liaison with developers, project managers, and Purchasing and Engineering Departments
  8. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  9. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, computer-assisted design (CAD) software, and other related software
  10. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration, and percent and to read and interpret metal rule

 

Required Education/Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline required
  2. Three years of related quality control experience and/or training in either a miscellaneous metal fabrication facility, structural steel fabrication facility, or a curtain wall fabrication/production facility; or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  3. Five years minimum experience related to the steel fabrication industry
  4. Use of measurement equipment, squares, levels, tape measures, micrometers

  3. Delivering timely responses on QC reports to Project Managers and Purchasing Dept

 

Work Environment

 

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing some of the duties of this job, the employee is required to inspect projects and may be exposed to ongoing construction and various weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud.

 

The employee is required to have a clean workspace in the office. In an instance where the employee is working offsite, at home, at a hotel, etc., the employee is required to have a clean workspace for virtual meetings, internally or externally with clients, vendors, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and verbally communicate. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, stand, crouch or crawl for prolonged periods. The employee must also lift and move up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects. Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects.

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Personal Protective Equipment

 

Utilize PP&E in compliance with OSHA standard and per site specific safety programs.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

 

This is a full-time position (40 hours). Workdays are Monday through Friday, work times are dependent on department, projects, and supervisor’s request and approval.
