RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Develop and implement advocacy programs and tools for use at the local, regional, or international level to address policies and legislation that discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression.

2) Coordinate media interest in IWI and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests.

3) Maintain knowledge related to the experiences of LGBTQ+ communities and areas of disparity, including attending conferences, workshops, and/or trainings to maintain knowledge and connect to other collaborative efforts with similar goals or models for strategic engagement.

4) Develop and maintain relationships with groups serving LGBTQ+ individuals.

5) Develop, lead and maintain task forces and workgroups as needed.

Key responsibilities and tasks: under the supervision of the Director of Advocacy & Public Information:

  • Help write, design and promote communication materials that increase awareness and mobilize people to take action to build awareness about LGBTQ+ rights and reduce violence and harassment against them.
  • Work with IWI other teams , organizational and coalition partners to drive awareness and action around policy affecting LGBTQ+ exposed to violence;
  • Layout and design policy briefs and advocacy documents to educate policymakers;
  • Continually update IWI website with new written and visual content to educate the public about opportunities to advance the prevention of violence and IWI related activities
  • Help draft related short statements for press, and work with IWI departments to plan events support with write and produce IWI Update newsletter for multiple stakeholders;
  • Draft email actions and social media posts that inspire people to take action,
  • Help leverage headlines to launch fast-breaking campaigns that get the attention of media outlets, opinion leaders and policymakers
  • Help manage presence in social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other similar community sites, posting on relevant blogs, and seeding content into social applications as needed
  • Monitor related trends in traditional and social media tools and applications and provide regular feedback to management and staff of insights gained from such monitoring
  • Continually update media list and maintain healthy media relations with targeted media contacts.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social Work, Psychology, Gender Studies, or a related field with at least 4 years experience working as a writer, journalist, digital organizer, non-profit communications associate or designer;
  • Two years of previous community-based, coalition-building experience along with community outreach and education.
  • Understanding gender identity and disparities faced by transgender and gender non-conforming youth
  • Commitment to social justice and ending violence against women, children, youth and LGBTQ+.
  • Multi languages skills (Fluent in English is a MUST)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse range of groups, professionals, agencies, community members and parents and managing multiple complex initiatives across organizational boundaries in close collaboration with leaders
  • Knowledge of policy advocacy; experience working in NGOs a plus
  • Superior attention to detail and command of contemporary computer skills, office hardware, PC software (Windows environment).
  • Substantial experience utilizing, engaging, and organizing on various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) and collaboration platforms (i.e., Google calendar, Zoom, etc.) a plus.
