HRMA Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Advisor

DCA is recruiting a Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Advisor to support our global humanitarian operations, with in specific focus on Francophone Africa. The role is home based in Africa or the Middle East, with a preference for a country where DCA has a country programme. Applicants must have the right to live and work in that country.

The Humanitarian Response and Mine Action (HRMA) Unit provides operational and strategic support to DCAs humanitarian operations worldwide. Comprised of thematic and humanitarian advisors and humanitarian response officers, the unit takes the lead on designing organizational responses to crises outside of existing areas of operation and providing technical support to established country programmes on key thematic areas including: humanitarian mine action, protection, conflict prevention and peacebuilding, cash and markets.

Part of DCA’s Programme, Advocacy and Learning (PAL) and Humanitarian Response and Mine Action (HRMA) Units, the Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding (CPPB) thematic area seeks to provide technical services to DCA Country Offices, departments, and units so that DCA’s engagement in conflict affected settings is strengthened to ‘Do No Harm’, maximise positive impact (‘Do Some Good’), and where possible support durable peacebuilding. DCA understands peacebuilding as a broad range of conflict sensitive approaches with a common commitment to address drivers of violence and peace.

About the role:

Referring to the HRMA Team Leader/ Senior Advisor Mine Action, the HRMA CPPB Advisor is the technical advisory and support lead on CPPB in the HRMA Unit, providing technical services to DCA’s Country Offices, Units and Departments, and works closely and in complementarity with the Senior CPPB Advisor in the PAL Unit.

This role is pivotal in integrating a broad spectrum of conflict and gender sensitive approaches to strengthening peacebuilding efforts, emphasizing localization, the Humanitarian-Development-Peacebuilding Nexus, Armed Violence Reduction/ Humanitarian Mine Action, and other key thematic areas.

During the first year the Advisor is expected to dedicate up to 60% (but not less than 50%) of their time supporting the country programmes in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali, based on their technical support needs. Extensive travel is expected, including regular visits to Copenhagen, Denmark.

The HRMA Conflict Prevention & Peacebuilding Adviser will demonstrate the following key capacities:

• A proven quality track record working on conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
• A relevant Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited academic institution.
• At least several years’ relevant experience working in humanitarian, development and/or peacebuilding sector in complex emergency settings affected by violent conflict.
• Very good understanding of and experience with integrating conflict sensitive approaches in projects and operations in conflict-affected contexts.
• Evidenced experience in the implementation and technical support of projects identifying and addressing drivers of violent conflict, such as dialogue facilitation, community violence reduction, community safety/action planning, social cohesion building, conflict resolution, community-level mediation, faith-based actor engagement, peace education, local peace actor strengthening, and women and youth peacebuilders empowerment.
• Evidenced capacity strengthening and training skills, reflecting applied understanding of adult learning concepts, including the development of new learning resources.
• Relevant fundraising and project proposal development experience, including knowledge of key donor policies and requirements and experience with partner engagement.
• Self-driven and solution-oriented individual, demonstrating steadfast technical and professional integrity and working well both independently and as part of ad hoc formed teams.
• Fluency in French and English required; Arabic or other language skills highly advantageous.
• Ability and willingness to travel and work in diverse, challenging and potentially unstable environments for extended periods of time.
• Expertise in intersecting themes of conflict and climate change, gender, youth, HDP Nexus, faith-based actors (advantageous).
