Corporate Development Associate Internship Position

Corporate Development (CD) is responsible for mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, equity investments and divestitures at both the corporate and business unit level. Individual project assignments are based on business needs, as well as personal capabilities and development goals.

  • Manage, coordinate and execute M&A deals and processes.
  • Perform detailed financial analysis – develop comprehensive valuation and synergy models to calculate value of acquisition target and size of transaction.
  • Perform sensitivity analyzes to assess changes in the value of the acquisition target across a variety of scenarios (macro-economic and commercial variables).
  • Evaluate acquisition opportunities including review of target company’s financial documents, customer contracts, commercial results, financing agreements, and industry reports.
  • Assist in preparation and presentation of investment recommendations to Cargill’s Executive Team and Board of Directors.
  • Participate in financial and commercial negotiations with counterparties on behalf of Cargill as part of potential transactions.
  • Engage with Cargill’s businesses to manage transaction processes.
  • Support directors, managers and other associates in a wide range of projects.
  • Provide mentorship and feedback to CD and other business team members. 

What We Provide

  • Variety of transactions: work on cultivating and executing corporate development projects (including acquisitions, divestitures, joint-ventures and investments) across Cargill’s broad array of businesses in the Americas and globally. Over the last few years, members of the CD team have been involved in Cargill’s JV with Continental Grain Company to acquire Sanderson Farms; the acquisition of Croda; an equity investment in Multiexport Foods; and the divestiture of a $10 billion alternative asset manager (CarVal Investors), among other transactions.
  • A Global Experience: think about how to manage the risks and leverage the opportunities presented by the biggest global issues facing the world today – from food security, food safety, and sustainability to global trade flows and new technologies and business models.
  • Exposure to Senior Leadership: work directly and frequently alongside senior executives.
  • Strong General Management Foundation: In CD, you will have the opportunity to contribute to and lead project teams, hone advanced financial & corporate development knowledge and general management skills, and develop a network with colleagues from operations, finance, trading, and sales.

Internship Details

  • Internships are paid and are typically 10 weeks in duration.
  • Interns who demonstrate outstanding performance and a curiosity to learn more may be offered a full-time position for the following year (or an internship for dual degree candidates graduating after the summer of 2023).
  • Housing assistance and relocation reimbursement are available to interns who qualify.
  • Day-to-day transportation to and from work is the responsibility of the intern.

Job Location:

  • This position is based in Wayzata, MN
  • This hybrid position has expectations around regular time in the office and allows for remote work at other times

Required Qualifications

  • Pursuing an MBA or relevant Master’s degree with anticipated graduation date in 2024 or 2025.
  • Able to complete a 10 week internship in the summer (May/June- August 2023)
  • Ability to lead teams across a diverse set of backgrounds and work with teams across functions and businesses on transactions, including senior leadership (CXO level)
  • Strong valuation knowledge (particularly discounted cash flow) and strong understanding of financial and accounting principles
  • Ability to execute financial modeling efforts at a high level, including providing guidance to junior team members and ensuring consistent quality and accuracy of analysis
  • Work effectively with people at all levels in an organization and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to learn from and contribute to a high-performance team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese
  • International experience
  • Degree concentration in finance
  • Prior experience in transactions, including playing an integral part during the due diligence process
  • Previous work experience in an investment bank, private equity firm, boutique advisory, Big 4 or a multi-national corporation (corporate development or business development function)
  • Travel regionally up to 10% depending on COVID-19 related travel restrictions
