Centre for Humanitarian Leadership

Centre for Humanitarian Leadership (CHL)

CHL is an innovative collaboration between Deakin University and Save the Children Australia that combines quality practice with academic rigour. We are transforming humanitarian leaders and influencing how organisations, and the system, respond to the increasingly complex global context. We champion humanitarian action that centres the agency of communities affected by crises, respects diverse perspectives, elevates local actors, and furthers social justice.

CHL has been delivering humanitarian leadership training for over a decade. We have graduated more than 700 leaders from 100 countries from our accredited university courses in English and French, and have welcomed hundreds of first responders working in crisis response and recovery to our hands-on short courses with flexible delivery models.

The Centre for Humanitarian Leadership delivers:
• Accredited university courses and pathways through Deakin University
• Bespoke leadership development and training programs incorporating professional coaching and mentoring
• Academic research and policy insights
• Globally recognised events and ability to convene diverse audiences for challenging conversations

The result is a rich community of leaders dedicated to teaching, understanding, analysing, demonstrating, interrogating, and constantly refining what it means to be an effective humanitarian leader.

West and Central Africa (WCA) Representative

The WCA representative (in-region) will lead partnership discussions and course promotion of the Diplôme d’Études Superieures en Leadership Humanitaire (DESLH) and Programme de Leadership en Situation de Crise (PLC) in WCA. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with relevant external stakeholders, including CSOs, INGOs, the UN, Universities and the private sector in order to initiate research and teaching partnerships, support student and faculty recruitment, and identify opportunities for collaborative action.

Working with the CHL Diverse Leadership in Crises program team, the WCA representative will support events with the aim of strengthening collective action on crisis leadership across the West and Central Africa region.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in humanitarian response and/or leadership education, with demonstrable experience of building successful partnerships. They will have a robust network among humanitarian experts across the region. Their initiative and drive would ensure identification of new opportunities to strengthen crisis leadership in the region. Their knowledge of education and training, as well as an understanding of the WCA context, would enable high quality support to content adaptation, as well as the potential for ad-hoc research, teaching and assessment support. They will have working proficiency in French and English.
