US Accountant

Here at Human Appeal, we have an exciting opportunity for a US Accountant to join our team, based at our California office. You will join us on a full-time basis for an initial 1-year fixed term contract with a view to progressing into a permanent role. In return, you will receive a competitive salary!

Human Appeal is a faith-based charity that aims to abolish poverty by providing humanitarian aid, sustainable development programs and championing advocacy for our beneficiaries worldwide.

As US Accountant, the successful candidate will play an integral role in ensuring that the charity’s funders, donors, suppliers, volunteers and staff are paid appropriately and for ensuring that income is properly recognised in the systems by delivering and maintaining an efficient and effective accounts system. Responsible for maintaining all associated internal controls, policies and procedures and adhering to accounting regulations and associated legislation via utilisation of in-house accounts and management systems in order to safeguard the charity, deliver value for money, save costs, mitigate risk and prevent misappropriation of income and expenditure. We are ideally looking to appoint somebody immediately to this role.

Key duties and responsibilities of the US Accountant:
• Review all supplier invoices for appropriate documentation and approval prior to payment
• Log (file and scan) invoices, including expenses, ad-hoc payment requests and any other items which require processing through the Accounts Management System (AMS) & Donor Management System (DMS)
• Ensure efficient and timely accounts payable month-end closing
• Preparing accruals and prepayments
• Review AMS to prepare reports identifying which staff and suppliers require payments
• Ensure payments are being made appropriately in line with payment terms via upload to BACS online banking system, prior to passing to bank authorizers for approval
• Prepare and distribute remittance advices to suppliers
• Prepare payment documents relating to suppliers paid by direct debit
• Receive supplier statements, match those against payments made; invoices ready for payment and invoices in query
• Reconciliation of supplier accounts
• Producing and reconciling monthly creditor reports and analyzing aged creditors reports
• Ensure income from donors and fundraising events are matched on DMS & posted to AMS
• Reconcile online giving income; post to the DMS system & AMS
• Ensure regular donations received via direct debits, standing orders and ad-hoc cash & cheques are processed and entered onto DMS and posted to AMS
• Reconciliation of various bank accounts as assigned
• Contribute to system & process improvements
• Contribute to the month end & year end accounts closing and external audit
• Review budgets versus actuals performance with budget holders
• Act as first point of contact (via phone, email, post or in person) for all income & expenditure related enquiries, including disputed items.
• Be flexible in the provision of support and cover for team members as required
• All activities to be performed in a timely and efficient manner
• Ensure enquiries from all stakeholders are addressed in an appropriate & timely manner
• Abide by the organizational policies and procedures
• Travel nationally and internationally to support Human Appeal offices and partners, as required
What we’re looking for in our US Accountant:
• Educated in a Finance discipline with an Accounting Qualification
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in a relevant role
• Computer literate, with knowledge of MS Office Suite
• Financial Accounting Systems
• Experience using Salesforce is desirable
• Fluent written and spoken English is essential. Additional languages such as Arabic, Urdu, are desirable
• Passionate and knowledgeable about the international development sector

• Safeguarding bright futures for more than 22,000 vulnerable orphans in 9 countries. Our one-to-one sponsorship programme has a built-in school attendance requirement while covering the cost of food, housing, medical care, and learning materials
