The role

The Ukrainian On-demand Language Lead will collaborate remotely on CLEAR Global projects to ensure quality and timely delivery of linguistic tasks in their language, and provide insights to the wider team about their language and community. The Language Lead will also support the Community Team to ensure engagement of the pool of community members and that capacity is sufficient to meet the demand in their language. This will also entail actively supporting recruitment and retention of volunteers, and contributing to community engagement initiatives. The Language Lead will provide Quality Assurance when needed and relay constructive feedback to the community members involved to encourage improvements, also by providing volunteers with relevant language resources. The Ukrainian On-demand Language Lead will work in close cooperation with the Ukraine Response Team and the Community Team.

Responsibilities

• Overseeing linguistic tasks for the organization, taking responsibility for strategic incoming requests in their language of reference to ensure timely deliveries that meet high quality standards; this may entail personally translating, revising, post-editing, reviewing documents, including terminology work, or providing linguistic quality inspections;
• Provide the CLEAR Global teams with expert insights on their language and community to support informed decision-making;
• Help build a TWB community who actively engages in delivering language support services in relevant local languages for the Ukraine response;
• Foster community motivation by contributing to community engagement activities, and proactively support external recruitment of new community members, under the guidance of the Community Team;
• If needed, assist onboarding and supporting community members;
• When warranted, evaluating and documenting translation quality and providing constructive feedback to community members.

Requirements

• Ukrainian native speaker
• 5+ years of experience as a professional translator
• Determined and committed to high quality standards with attention to detail
• Strong communication skills and team player
• High standard of written and spoken English
• Track record of working with small teams and/or volunteers, a plus
• Able to work under pressure against the clock and find creative solutions
• Willing to explore new technologies
• Previous experience with humanitarian aid and/or with non-profit organizations, a plus
• Access to a stable internet connection

Background

In an emergency, CLEAR Global provides language support to facilitate vital two-way communication between the people affected and humanitarian responders. This happens both remotely and on the ground. Remotely, CLEAR Global works with a global network of linguists to translate text, audio and audiovisual content from and into the languages of crisis-affected people. We also provide information, guidance, and language mapping support to humanitarian organizations. On the ground, country program teams offer a range of support, from research and training to glossary development and pictorial communication tools. We are also leading the development of language technology for marginalized languages. This has the potential to shift the power dynamic in emergencies and international development contexts, placing control of communication and information access in the hands of the people in need of support.
