ABOUT US

Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a dynamic, international non-governmental organization. We work to reduce violence and protect civilians in countries affected by violent conflict and its aftermath through the implementation of unarmed civilian protection programming. NP implements programming through the deployment of civilian protection teams to the field and is continuing to scale up to meet the growing needs of the communities we serve. Programming is founded on unarmed civilian protection and is thematically focused on protection in displacement, child protection, gender-based violence protection, and inter-communal violence reduction.

 

 SCOPE OF THE WORK

The objective of this position is to provide translation and interpretation services to support NP Iraq. They will translate from English to Arabic/Kurdish and Arabic/Kurdish to English documents produced by field teams including daily activity reports, conflict and context analysis reports, facilitation guides and manuals, and other written material produced by both field teams and Erbil-based staff. Additionally, they will interpret to enhance communications between staff members at NP, for example during meetings, as well as NP with communities in Iraq and key stakeholders. This includes providing information about programmatic activities to a range of audiences.

 

 Key responsibilities

   1.Translation and Interpretation:

  • Provide translation of documents from English to Arabic or Kurdish, and Arabic or Kurdish to English according to needs. Examples of documents may include:
    • Daily field activity reports, conflict and context analysis reports, facilitation guides and manuals
    • Assessments, surveys, and qualitative interview question guides
    • Official request letters to the Government of Iraq
    • HR related documents
    • Emails to NP staff
    • Consecutive face-to-face and remote interpretation during staff meetings, trainings, and discussion & analysis sessions
  • Perform efficient and accurate translation during team meetings, bi-lateral meetings, multi-lateral meetings, etc., including one to one and group settings
  • Ensure quality and accuracy of translated documents before submission by reviewing meaning, grammar and syntax
  • Edit and proof-read texts to ensure the accuracy of the terms and terminology used in the documents.
  • Perform any other work duties reasonably assigned by the translator’s line manager.
  • Ensure translated files are properly stored and assure adherence to the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Provide necessary support to organize events and/or meetings requiring simultaneous translation

 

   2.Commitment to NP Principles

  • Demonstrate a commitment to NP’s mandate and principles
  • Maintain a positive image of the organization full time while communicating with external actors, staff or operating in the field.

 


Qualifications & Preferred Skills

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:

Education, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Minimum 2-year experience in working as a translator and interpreter, preferably with an international NGO.
  • Proven skills in translation and interpretation from Arabic and into English and vice versa
  • Native knowledge of Arabic language with excellent writing capacities are essential
  • Excellent English language abilities (both verbal and written) essential
  • Preference given to applicants who also have excellent knowledge and translation ability in Kurdish language – with a focus on Badini accent.
  • University degree in translation/ linguistics or administration preferred.

  • Ability to adjust to difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances
  • Excellent level of written and spoken English and Arabic languages 
  • Desired fluency in Kurdish
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook email
