JOB PURPOSE:

As Amnesty International’s expert on climate and other social justice issues, you will be expected to have a good grasp of current developmental issues on climate justice and just economies. The role will enrich the southern Africa Regional office’s ability to use emerging trends on business and just economies to formulate advocacy and campaigning strategies that address root causes of human rights violations in southern Africa with a particular emphasis on Madagascar. You will be involved in the development a nd implementation of overarching research and campaigning strategies to deliver impact in relation to agreed priorities, providing research expertise, political judgment and analytical, communication and representational skills. You will investigate and produce outputs on agreed themes in a timely manner. You will be agile, quick and nimble footed.

ABOUT YOU:

You will be passionate about working across various human rights issues, with particular experience in writing high-quality publications. You will be fluent speaking in both English and French, along with writing skills.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write or contribute to the drafting of timely and effective reports, briefings, position papers, correspondence, action materials, press releases, and other internal and external documents in order to implement AI’s agreed deliverables.
  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of specific advocacy initiatives, contribute to campaigning strategies, and manage specific sub-projects within the framework of agreed strategies. This may include supervision of consultants.
  • Maintain a comprehensive overview of trends and developments on climate and environmental justice, and relevant specialist subjects, as agreed with the line manager.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in writing high-quality publications to deadline for human rights organizations or the media is essential;
  • Extensive professional experience of undertaking research on human rights and/or investigating global businesses and their role in human rights abuses or corporate crimes;
  • Knowledge of the international human rights legal framework;
  • Ability to analyse human rights issues, and to develop short and long-term strategies to achieve human rights impact and solid change;
  • Fluent speaking in both English and French
