The Program

The Vanuatu Education Support Program Phase II (VESP II) is funded by the Australian Government’s aid program and implemented in cooperation with the Government of Vanuatu. The central focus of VESP II is supporting the Ministry of Education and Training to improve education delivery in schools. With increased community and parental engagement and by strengthening devolved management in provinces, schools can provide accessible, quality education for children (K-6).

The Position

The overall objective of this assignment is to build capacity of the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) and provincial staff to support teachers to apply good practice, and use appropriate materials when teaching students in Years 1-6 to learn English as an additional language. This assignment will focus on providing a snapshot of what the practice is at present, then working with CDU to develop a way forward to support teachers in classrooms. This position will:

  • Support the CDU to progress training for teachers using the materials developed for Year 1-3 and Years 4-6 to teach English as an additional language
  • Monitor teaching in classrooms to identify where intensive support is required and then develop supplementary materials and trainings as required
  • Identify evidenced based tactics that can be used by teachers in their classrooms
  • Identify approaches to compensate for some teachers below par language skills in the foreign language
  • Explore development of literacy leaders in schools and coaches in provinces

The Person

The right person has similar previous ‘hands-on’ experience in supporting teachers at school-level to improve their practices.

  • A tertiary qualification in primary teaching
  • Experience delivering school-level teacher training, especially in remote and resource constrained contexts is an advantage
  • Experience delivering training on how to teach English as an additional language, in multilingual contexts
  • Has the ability to work collaboratively in teams, while also mentoring and coaching colleagues from different social and cultural backgrounds is essential.
  • Has previous experience in the Pacific. Experience in Vanuatu is a significant advantage.
