Surveillance Strategic Litigation Project Lead

Are you a seasoned lawyer with strategic litigation experience who is committed to helping human rights defenders, journalists, and other members of civil society? Do you want to be the person that will lead Amnesty International’s litigation efforts on unlawful targeted surveillance, in particular cases sparked by the recent Pegasus Project revelations?

JOB PURPOSE:

**The Consultant will work directly with Amnesty Tech’s Deputy Programme Director/Head of Disrupting Surveillance Team and the Researcher/Advisor on the Disrupting Surveillance Team to lead a project focused on exploring and seizing opportunities for strategic litigation in order to secure accountability for violations related to the Pegasus Project revelations, and more broadly related to unlawful targeted surveillance.

ABOUT YOU:

We are looking for a consultant to manage and deliver research projects pertaining to strategic litigation, advise on ongoing litigation and other relevant accountability efforts focusing on surveillance companies, and develop at least one new strategic litigation case.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:(please refer to the TOR for the full list of deliverables)

The work of the consultant will fall into four categories:

  • Lead on legal research to support strategic litigation work related to the Pegasus Project.
  • Lead an initiative focused on researching class action suits and the viability of said actions in the context of the international surveillance industry.
  • Be the main liaison with those bringing cases in relation to the Pegasus Project, as well as Amnesty International’s Strategic Litigation Unit, and ensure that Amnesty International support is well planned, timely and collaborative.
  • Manage the coordination and drafting of Amnesty International’s contributions to joint strategic litigations efforts, such as amicus briefs.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: (please refer to the TOR for the full list)

  • Lawyer with a graduate degree in relevant areas for the project, preferably in human rights or international law.
  • Substantial, proven professional experience in strategic litigation and legal advice, preferably in the context of the surveillance industry.
  • Expert knowledge of unlawful targeted surveillance of human rights defenders and journalists.
  • Substantive expertise in the surveillance industry and efforts to regulate it.
