JOB PURPOSE:

The Global Human Rights Defenders programme is a nimble team that works dynamically with colleagues both within and outside Amnesty International , looking for opportunities to increase the protection and recognition of human rights defenders at risk as well as fighting against the erosion of civic space. The role will have the opportunity to use different tactics to achieve this, from supporting with the creation of policy, research and campaigning materials, to working with colleagues and partners to advance advocacy initiatives.

ABOUT YOU:

An enthusiastic, emotionally intelligent advocate with experience of working in partnership with others to deliver advocacy, research, campaigning and policy projects and who may have had personal or professional experience of fighting for human rights, justice, peace or against discrimination. You will have very good understanding of the diverse and intersecting challenges faced by those who defend human rights and will be at ease working with a range of different people whether they are front line activists under threat, or colleagues in different parts of the wider human rights movement.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To contribute to the development and implementation of campaigning and advocacy strategies to effect human rights progress including by generating engaging material and initiatives based on persuasive research in coordination with Amnesty colleagues and activists, partner organizations, and individual human rights defenders;
  • To develop such strategies in a participatory manner, consulting with and incorporating input from relevant stakeholders from within and outside the organisation, such as partner organisations, experts and activists;
  • To write or otherwise devise high-quality campaigning, research, and advocacy materials in a clear, concise and compelling manner. These materials will be for both external and internal use, such as campaigning strategies and actions, narratives, reports and briefings, media and social media material, advocacy briefings in a range of formats, so that our research and recommendations are shared and actioned by our organization and/or by partners and the public;
  • To develop and maintain fruitful communication and cooperation with national and international NGOs, civil society coalitions, and other external partners in the development and implementation of joint strategies and plans in order to achieve human rights impact together.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in developing outputs for campaigning, research, policy and advocacy activities in a participatory and cooperative manner to mobilise diverse actors for a common goal;
  • Experience of working in partnership/coalition with civil society organizations, networks or coalitions;
  • Knowledge of issues relating to the promotion and protection of civic space and human rights defenders at risk, particularly those facing discrimination and marginalization;
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills, including an ability to express ideas in a clear and compelling manner in English both orally and in writing, and to communicate complex information and institutional positions in an accurate yet concise way. An additional language such as French, Spanish or Arabic would be a distinct advantage.
