The Opportunity

On February 6 at 4:17 am local time, the strongest earthquake since 1939 struck southern Türkiye, at a magnitude of 7.8, with its center in Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaras province, followed by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras the same day. As of February 16, nearly 36,187 have lost their lives and 216,347 people have been evacuated to other cities. Preliminary damage need assessment estimated 224,923 independent units and 50,576 buildings were fully damaged. There is high infrastructure damages in affected areas. Save the Children is focussing on life saving support in this initial stage. SCI aims to reach more children through integrated program intervention.
Shelter Engineer aims to support Earthquake response team to conduct infrastructure damage need assessment, prepare feasibility reports to establish temporary and semi-permanent structures, to prepare drawings, bill of quantity (BOQ), cost estimate and monitoring checklist as well leading to build such construction activities as per SCI Construction and procurement policy.

In order to be successful you will bring/have:

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural engineering, or Architecture
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in the construction field
  • High level skill on CAD software
  • High level of skill of developing BOQs and Cost estimate.
  • Experience of site supervision and project management for construction
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience of mentoring and coaching staff to achieve their goals
  • Advise on international best practice for building regulations for hazard resistance in non-engineered buildings.
  • Commitment to, thorough understanding of, and able to train staff in participation and accountability approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to set up monitoring & evaluation systems in large complex programmes.
  • Proven ability of mentoring and coaching.
  • Experience of developing and negotiating successful partnerships with institutional donors
  • Ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports
  • Proven ability to influence change at an operational and strategic level.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • The capacity and willingness to be extremely flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.

Desirable:

  • Experience of designing / leading emergency shelter responses.
  • Fluent in English languages both speaking and writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to set up learning and development processes for a large team
  • Experience of senior level representation, including coordination at national, SAG/TWG or governmental level

Position holder will be based in Gaziantep or Hatay, therefore legal right to work in Türkiye is necessary at the time of application.
