This position will be part of a three person iMMAP team which will work closely together to deliver to project to the donor, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The team will consist of a Project Manager, a Senior Researcher and a Junior/ Assistant Researcher.

ECDC is an Agency of the European Union (EU) with a mission to identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by infectious diseases. To achieve this it shall (a) search for, collect, collate, evaluate and disseminate relevant scientific and technical data on infectious diseases; (b) provide scientific opinions and scientific and technical assistance including training; (c) provide timely information to the Commission, the Member States, Community agencies and international organisations active within the field of public health; (d) coordinate the European networking of bodies operating in the fields within the Centre’s mission, including networks arising from public health activities supported by the Commission and operating the dedicated surveillance networks; and (e) exchange information, expertise and best practices, and facilitate the development and implementation of joint actions within the field of its mission.

Description of Duties

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, with the support of the Junior Researcher and in close collaboration with the technical team at ECDC, the Senior Researcher will, produce four case studies, each focusing on one specific EU/EEA country. The case studies will detail the range and nature of prevention strategies, in addition to a mapping of actors working in prevention, including behavioural and cultural insights, as well as health policy management. The actors may include individuals, public institutions, academia, and civil society.

The desired approach is a mixed-methods approach for the case studies. This include at least six semi-structured interviews for each participating country, a literature review, and a social network mapping methodology for the identification of actors and their relationships.

Each case study shall explore the following,

How are prevention strategies and activities organised in the given health system? What strategies or policies exist and at which level? What is the scrope of these policies or strategies?

Mapping of actors including Ministry of Health, Public Health Institutes, academia, as well as civil society actors and other organisations working in prevention at national, sub-national, and local levels.

To what extent do prevention strategies and activities for different diseases interact? What type of integration exists between disease groups? Are there cross-cutting areas with opportunities for synergies in prevention between groups and actors working on different diseases?

Identification of areas in which behavioural and cultural insights are used in guiding or supporting prevention strategies and activities across different diseases.

Requirements

Education:

  • With minimum, a higher degree (Master’s) in public health, sociology or anthropology or similar.

Experience:

  • Minimum six years’ experience in the fields of sociology, anthropology, or public health research using qualitative approaches.
  • Experience in conducting interviews, literature reviews and report writing.
  • Proven experience in qualitative data analysis
  • Proven experience of public health research in at least two EU/EEA countries
  • Experience in Stakeholder Mapping Excercise

Language:

  • Fluency in English required (C1 level language proficiency in the Common European Framework for Reference for Languages)
