Position Summary

Under the supervision of the site Community Educator, the Senior Outreach Representative will engage, recruit, and retain participants for COVID-related grant funded research and HIV Prevention Trials Network research. S/he will be responsible for all research-related outreach, engagement, recruitment activities, and will implement community-based study retention measures. In coordination with the Community Educator and Outreach Workers, s/he will conduct community outreach and recruitment activities designed to build awareness, interest, and participation in clinical research initiatives at the Harlem Prevention Center.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct all research activities in accordance with study protocol, standard operating procedures and other appropriate institutional regulations, procedures and policies, including procedures to safeguard confidentiality of study participants.-5%
  • Monitor the recruitment of participants for research studies and oversee efforts geared to improve participant retention. – 5%
  • Assist in the planning and organization of site participation in local community events such as health fairs, PRIDE events, etc. – 10%
  • Assist in scheduling study participant appointments for screening visits, as well as assist research staff with follow up appointments for succeeding study visits as required. – 5%
  • Outreach to relevant community partners through educational and collaborative activities and attendance at community advisory board (CAB) meetings and stakeholder functions. -10%
  • In coordination with the site Community Educator and Outreach Workers, create/prepare flyers, and other outreach and recruitment materials as required. – 5%
  • Outreach to engage, educate, recruit, and retain study participants in community and non-traditional settings (bars, subways, informal gatherings etc). -10%
  • Conduct study-related outreach over the telephone, via email, and through social media. – 5%
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with potential and enrolled participants, visitors, and other site staff. – 5%
  • Work flexible hours (evenings & weekends), as needed. -5%
  • Maintain professional behavior in non-traditional work settings (night clubs, public venues, informal gatherings, etc.). – 5%
  • Work independently, exercise initiative, use discretion when handling confidential information, and manage multiple priorities under pressure. – 5%
  • Contribute to study team outreach and retention strategies. – 5%
  • Regularly provide updates on the progress of recruitment and retention activities to the research team and site leadership to ensure appropriate and timely enrollments, quickly identify difficulties, and implement corrective measures. – 5%
  • Perform informal presentations at various community-based organizations, as required. -5%
  • Attend study specific and other study or research network related trainings and meetings as requested by the site coordinator. -5%
  • Perform other duties as assigned. -5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent and 6 months of community-based recruitment experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries in diverse public settings.
  • Outgoing and enthusiastic personality.
  • Previous experience in research studies.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years of community-based recruitment experience.
  • Experience in conducting outreach in mobile vans and other similar venues.
  • Experience working with COVID related recruitment activities.
  • Experience in conducting outreach in, or familiarity with, Gay/MSM/Transgender venues and communities.
  • Good knowledge of Harlem and other New York City communities of men who have sex with men and transgender persons who have sex with men.
  • Must understand the community’s culture and ethnicity and be able to take advantage of its opportunities and to respond positively to its challenges.
  • Emotional maturity, tact, integrity, and tolerance of differing points of view and beliefs.
  • Comfortable working with diverse, medically under-served populations and high-risk communities.
  • Experience with advocating and organizing events surrounding LGBT issues.

Other Requirements

  • Domestic travel required
