Internews

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews seeks two experienced facilitators and/or experts in scenario-based trainings and tabletop exercises to join our project as short-term consultants (6-10 days over a one month period). The consultants will work with the Internews team to train participating journalists from six Central European countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia) in the basics of designing and facilitating scenario-based trainings and tabletop exercises. These experts will serve as advisors for an online content sprint, during which participating journalists will collaboratively design scenarios (including all resources for facilitation) to be used for digital security trainings within the journalist community. Outputs from the content sprint will include all resources required to facilitate each scenario: robust and adaptable storylines, worksheets and assets, prototypes, curricula, and facilitation guides for providing simple and safe simulations or explorations of the threats.

The 70-20-10 Model for Learning and Development is a widely accepted model in training communities, suggesting that 70% of the information relevant to an individual’s behavior is obtained through hands-on learning experiences, 20% through engagement with others, and 10% through formal education. Given this data, the Journalist Security Fellowship will go beyond traditional training methods, by developing customized scenario-based trainings to allow individuals to safely practice new digital security approaches and identify challenges that may appear when responding to digital threats in real life. Participating journalists, alongside digital security experts and the two scenario-based training experts, will develop simulated or virtual environments where dangers can be visualized, experienced, felt and understood. This immersive learning will allow participants to collaboratively problem-solve, build a shared understanding of threats and risks, and create peer support networks for more resilient defenses.

The Journalist Security Fellowship program will pursue several types of scenario-based training, including tabletop exercises (such as role-playing potential attacks) and simulations (such as spear-phishing or censorship simulations). Following the content sprint, participating journalists will receive support to conduct the scenario-based trainings designed and developed during the sprint. All of those will be conducted in a safe, controlled environment.

LOGISTICS

This is a remote-based, short-term consultancy for 6-10 nonconsecutive days between April 1 and May 31, 2022.

All remote candidates will be considered. However, you must have work authorization in your location that does not require sponsorship from Internews. Additionally, there are locations in which Internews is not able to support fully remote work. Preference given to candidates based or working in target countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia).
