Chemonics

Chemonics seeks a rule of law strengthening specialist to support the strengthening of a post-conflict national judicial system. The objectives of the activity are to prepare justice sector actors and institutions for a post-conflict legal system incorporating best international rule of law practices while protecting human rights and promoting increased access to justice for all citizens. The position will be based in Southeast Asia with regional travel as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with counterparts from the courts, prosecution, and police at the highest levels of the government including at the ministry level
  • Serve as the local technical lead for the project’s activities, while reporting to the project’s director
  • Support strategic planning for court administration, legislative drafting, training of judges and prosecutors, the drafting of new procedural rules, a criminal code, and ethics-related provisions
  • Work closely with the project’s local technical specialists
  • Coordinate with short-term technical advisors providing support to the project’s activities and objectives

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor or its equivalent
  • 15 years of experience in a common law jurisdiction
  • Substantial litigation experience as a prosecutor, judge or lawyer
  • Experience in legislative drafting or legislation review from a criminal justice perspective
  • Experience living and working on transitional justice matters in an international setting is preferred
  • Excellent analytical abilities, written and oral communications skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in English
