The Role

The Rights in Crisis (RiC) Advocacy Advisor will take overall responsibility for managing the delivery of humanitarian advocacy and campaigns at the regional level and work in collaboration with different Oxfam entities (Oxfam country offices, Oxfam affiliates and Oxfam International) to highlight key regional issues.

The Incumbent will support Oxfam countries’ efforts to design and implement advocacy and campaign strategies to better meet the needs of civilians affected by conflict and humanitarian disaster in the Horn East and Central region (HECA) and tackling the root causes of these crises.

The position is accountable to the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator HECA with matrix management to the Regional Head of Programs HECA.

The person

We are looking for a dynamic and committed individual with the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science/International Affairs/Public Policy /Government with focus on conflict and security/humanitarian affairs/ governance/ risk Management (Advanced degree in related field would be an added advantage);
  • Substantial and proven experience in advocacy or campaigning for humanitarian or human rights;
  • Understanding of humanitarian response, disaster risk reduction, complex humanitarian emergencies, conflict resolution strategies, and international human rights/humanitarian law;
  • Ability to think and operate strategically, independently and creatively;
  • Lobbying and political skills: persuasive, diplomatic and articulate;
  • Experience in advocacy, research, policy, lobbying, media work and public campaigning, including the ability to act as a spokesperson when necessary;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and work independently yet cooperatively in a cross-cultural setting with a number of long distance working relationships;
  • Fluency in English and working knowledge of French is desirable;
  • Work effectively and collaboratively in support of building a team-based culture of work and partnership will perform all duties appropriately for a multi-cultural environment, treating all persons with dignity and respect, and will be familiar with and committed to Oxfam mission and values.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to countries where Oxfam works in HECA.
