The Residential Shelter Support Intern at Homeless Solutions, Inc. is responsible for providing client services to assist in the safe and effective operation of our Shelter facilities. This role is a paid (hourly, non-exempt), on-site position reporting to the Residential Support Division Manager . Part time hours (between 16-25 hours per week) will be supervised by experienced Residential Support Staff and Case Management Staff. Responsibilities will provide valuable, hands on social work experience, working directly with our clients to assist them in moving from a place of homelessness to appropriate living environments.

Internships will be assigned for a period of 3-6 months duration, with the potential opportunity to extend based on performance and organizational need.

Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities will include working with Case Management Staff to understand the individual needs and services for shelter clients to best facilitate their success in our programs, as well as

  • Routine paperwork.
  • Daily census/attendance sheets
  • Chore lists
  • Transportation lists
  • Communication log, Daily Flow report, incident reports and other reporting as required.
  • Provide physical and client related tasks which include:
  • Enforce client personal hygiene as well as cleanliness of rooms/common areas.
  • Conduct drug and alcohol testing.
  • Support Case Management during contraband searches.
  • Distribute and record medication administration.
  • Performed regularly scheduled safety checks
  • Monitor approved smoking area.
  • Monitor rooms/common area nightly for cleanliness.
  • Assign chores and supervise completion.
  • Perform regular basic cleaning protocols to facilitate a healthy physical environment.
  • Other responsibilities include:
  • Assist Volunteers and the Volunteer Manager at meal times and/or prepare meals when necessary.
  • Provide clerical assistance for programs in support of case management staff as requested
  • Contact police, fire and rescue personnel in an emergency.
  • Clearly communicate issues, concerns or recommendation regarding clients or operational issues to RS Division Manager and/or Case Management Staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in service training.
  • Exhibit strong personal accountability and awareness of and adherence to company standards, policies, procedures and processes in all aspects of employment with HSI.
  • Clearly communicate issues, concerns or recommendations regarding clients or operational issues to the Shelter Administrator, Supportive Housing Administrator or Case Management Staff.
  • Respond professionally to the need for flexibility in response to organizational changes.
  • Currently enrolled in a secondary education program in the field of social work, criminology, sociology, psychology or related field.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Good oral, written and basic computer skills.
  • Subject to satisfactory background checks.
  • Regular and predictable onsite attendance and reliable transportation are required during the scheduled hours for this position.
  • Physically capable of lifting and carrying supplies, up to 30 pounds
  • Ability to occasionally move about inside the residential housing facility, including navigating stairs and ramps.
  • Clarity of vision at close and long range.
