Association overview

Platform for Peace and Humanity is an international civic association promoting and advocating humanitarian values through international law, providing research-driven monitoring, consultancy and specialist expertise on international law, humanitarian and human security matters and advocating progressive development of international law in matters of international peace.

The organisation’s work is further structured into programmes: South East Europe and Black SeaRegion, Mediterranean, Central Asia, Towards the Enforcement of the Right to Peace and Ukraine.

The three regional programmes publish analysis in the Peace & Security Monitor publication with actionable policy recommendations supporting the Platform’s organisational objectives. The organisation also publishes a Weekly News Recap to raise awareness among the general and expert audience on the latest international justice and peace and security developments.

The Ukraine programme focuses on accountability-related projects concerning the international crimes committed in Ukraine.

Position overview

We are looking for one Researcher to join our accountability-related projects executed in the Ukraine programme which focus on universal jurisdiction litigation in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, outreach and interacting with Ukrainian communities and survivors and the preparation and organisation of training sessions for law-enforcement officials in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Start date: asap

Duration: 6-10 months

Commitment: approx. 10-20 hours/week, flexible work hours

Location: home office

Remuneration: a small monthly stipend

Duties and responsibilities

  • Research of elements of core international crimes implemented in the Czech Republic and other relevant provisions of substantive and procedural criminal law
  • Assistance with the preparation of a handbook and training sessions for investigators and prosecutors focusing on accountability for international crimes
  • Assistance with the preparation and submission of criminal complaints in the Czech Republic on behalf of victims and survivors of crimes committed in Ukraine
  • Assistance with the preparation of offline outreach events in major cities of the Czech Republic and Slovakia raising awareness among Ukrainian communities about accountability avenues on a domestic and international level

Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Passion and dedication to the mission and values of the organization, result-driven commitment, ability to work in an international team and handle uncertain situations with flexibility
  • at least three years of legal studies
  • A good understanding of Czech domestic legal order with a focus on substantive and procedural criminal law
  • A good understanding of international criminal law, international humanitarian law and/or human rights
  • Experience with academic writing
  • Very good proficiency in English (C1) and native proficiency in Czech language
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to convey complex information and messages in a simple way and easily understood by target audiences
  • Ability to meet reasonable deadlines

Desirable

  • Entrepreneurial spirit with out-of-the-box thinking to propose new initiatives
  • Willingness to continuously learn and develop new skills
  • Previous experience with non-profit organizations
