Our Food Team works to support sustainable, resilient and equitable terrestrial and aquatic food systems through collaborative research and meaningful dialogues. We are looking for a Researcher to join our Food Team on a full-time, permanent basis, working 35 hours per week, and focusing on the aquatic food systems workstream.

The Role

As a Researcher, you will contribute to the development of our work on aquatic food systems, with a focus on sustainable and equitable fisheries.

In particular, you will support a growing package of work focused on reducing social and ecological trade-offs in fisheries management and conservation interventions, and incentivising sustainable practices, while empowering small-scale fishing communities to build resilience.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, you’ll gather evidence, build capacity and influence policy on a range of topics, including fisheries governance, social and economic inclusion, and innovative financing.

Your role will also involve:

– Developing new research themes and project ideas
– Working with business development colleagues to prepare pitches and proposals
– Working with communications colleagues to influence and engage
– Co-ordinating, supervising and delegating work to partners, subcontractors and other researchers
– Organising meetings, workshops and other events

About You

To be considered, you will need:

– A postgraduate degree, or equivalent knowledge and experience, in a relevant discipline such as fisheries socioeconomics, marine conservation science, marine environmental management or environmental/development economics
– A solid research background, with a track record of growing publications in own field
– Excellent technical, analytical and conceptual skills, including an ability to work with both qualitative and quantitative data
– Experience of research team co-ordination, including from a distance
– Experience of working effectively with international partners, including government, civil society organisations and communities in low- and middle-income countries
– The ability to translate research ideas into fundraising concepts, proposals and applications
– The ability to communicate effectively to a range of audiences and provide policy advice

Please note, this role will require occasional travel for project commitments.
This role is also open to those who live outside the UK, as long as you have the right to work in the country you wish to reside in.

The salary range advertised in GBP is applicable in the UK only, and the salary offer in another country would depend on the local terms and conditions. We only use the UK salary structure to determine starting salaries, but it will not apply to salaries outside the UK thereafter.
