About Asian Disaster Preparedness Center:

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) is an autonomous international organization with a vision to reduce disaster and climate risk impacts on communities and countries in Asia and the Pacific by working with governments, development partners, international organizations, NGOs, civil society, private sector, media, and other key stakeholders.

Established in 1986 as a technical capacity-building center, ADPC has grown and diversified its expertise across social and physical sciences to support sustainable solutions for risk reduction across a broad range of specialist areas. With over 100 staff from 19 different nationalities and a wide range of professional expertise with experiences from all levels of engagement typically required for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Resilience (CR) in an effective manner. ADPC is a competent regional resource center and has seven thematic departments: Preparedness for Response and Recovery, Risk Governance, Climate Resilience, Urban Resilience, Health Risk Management, Geospatial Information, and ADPC Academy. These are supported by Finance, Human Resources and Administration, and Strategic Planning departments. ADPC works on three cross-cutting themes: Gender and Diversity, Poverty and Livelihoods, and Regional and Transboundary Cooperation through permanent working committees. ADPC recognizes the importance of examining the linkages between disaster risk management, poverty reduction, gender equality, sustainability, rights-based approaches, climate change, and regional cooperation. ADPC, through its programs, supports the implementation of national, regional, and global frameworks including Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 (SFDRR), the Paris Agreement for Climate Change, the New Urban Agenda, the recommendations and priorities of World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), etc.

ADPC, in consultation with its regional partners, is undertaking an Evaluation of Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) Programs in the Asia Pacific Region. The Researcher (Consultant) would assist Research and Data Analysis as well as Coordination tasks related to this assignment.

Expected Outputs: The consultant will support research and data analysis tasks under PRR programs. This may include but is not limited to: conducting research interviews, transcribing interview recordings, analyzing and coding qualitative and quantitative data sets, and providing inputs to reports, knowledge products, and other written documentation related to the research tasks.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

Research and Data Analysis

  • Undertake research and analysis as required under PRR programs
  • Carry out qualitative and quantitative data analysis under the assignments related to PRR programs
  • Assist in the conduct of research interviews, including the transcription and analysis of interview data
  • Perform coding and thematic analysis of qualitative data sets including through the use of data analysis computer software

Coordination

  • Participate in meetings/discussions with the program team as required
  • Adapt to the work plan provided by the supervisor
  • Coordinate with focal points from project partner organizations, including collaboration with academic institutes to complete tasks as required
  • Work closely with the program team and perform any additional tasks given by the supervisor,program leads, or the Director, PRR

Working Principles:

In performing the duties and responsibilities indicated above, the consultant will be supervised by the Program Lead-Innovation under the overall guidance of the Director, PRR. The consultant will closely work with other Program Leads and APP Country Program Managers, as applicable.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications and Specifications

  • Master’s degree / enrolled in a university studying in the field of disaster management, communications, or any other related field
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken
  • Experience in the application of research and data analysis in an academic or practical context
  • Experience in conducting interviews for the purpose of research, including transcription and coding
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Proficient in managing, analyzing, and coding quantitative and qualitative data sets, including potentially sensitive or confidential information
  • Experience in utilizing data analysis computer software such as NVivo is desirable but not essential
  • Ability to work with a team in a multicultural environment

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and takes initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work and time independently
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, team-oriented work style, and experience in working in a multicultural environment
  • Strong networking capacity and understanding of humanitarian and development nexus at local and regional levels
  • With strong desire to learn, undertake new challenges, willingness to work hard, and a good sense of humor balanced with seriousness about the quality and excellence of work

Duty Station: Bangkok, Thailand or online modality

Duration: September 2022 to December 2022 with the possibility of extension based on the performance and technical requirement of the position and the duration of the project.
