Technology & Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) Researcher/Adviser

**

JOB PURPOSE:

**As a Technology & ESCR Researcher/Adviser at the Algorithmic Accountability Lab, you will undertake desk and field-based research on the impact of algorithms and automated decision-making on economic, social and cultural rights; author position papers, reports, articles and other publications; drive innovative research-based investigations into government use of algorithms; represent Amnesty International externally and advocate for the promotion and protection of ESCR as they relate to technology, in particular artificial intelligence; and provide advice to the Amnesty movement on the issues at hand.

ABOUT YOU:

**A driven, enthusiastic and conscientious researcher with substantial experience designing and running research projects on technology related issues. You are comfortable researching in a campaigns and advocacy setting and using creative methodologies to investigate government use of algorithmic systems. You will be attentive to how research should be communicated to various audiences. You are proactive about identifying research opportunities and sharing these with your wider team, as well as maintaining momentum in long-term research projects. You are committed to embedding anti-racism, intersectionality and decolonial thinking in both your work and team’s wider culture.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Undertake desk and field-based research on the impact of public sector algorithmic and automated decision-making systems on economic, social and cultural rights, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of relevant ESCR concerns;
  • Co-develop a coherent and strategic research plan with the Head of the AAL and the AAL’s AI and Human Right’s researcher to shed light on public sector use of algorithmic systems in the delivery of essential services and social assistance programs, highlighting unscrutinised deployments and/or human rights violations;
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Amnesty International’s Economic and Social Justice (ESJ) Team to ensure ESCR expertise and policies on specific areas, such as housing, employment and education, are reflected in the AAL’s work.

  • Specialist and in-depth knowledge of economic and social rights and their intersection with technology, as well as an understanding of the relevant political, social, legal, economic, cultural, racial, ethnic and gender issues and the disparate impacts technologies based on these characteristics and identities;
  • Extensive professional experience of conducting high-quality research on human rights issues, in particular ESCR;
  • Good understanding of key technologies – in particular artificial intelligence, algorithmic/automated decision-making systems and their intersection with the promotion and protection of human rights;
  • Excellent public speaking skills and ability to communicate complex technical concepts and research findings to a range of audiences including policymakers, journalists, academics, other CSOs and more;
