Reinsurance Accountant Senior

Summary & Key Responsibilities

Responsible for daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reinsurance accounting processes with guidance and oversight from Reinsurance Accounting Manager. Expected to review and analyze financial results and provide explanations. Expected to have an understanding of State Auto’s corporate structure as well as its GAAP and Statutory financial statements. Ability to understand and interpret reinsurance contract wording to ensure appropriate set-up in the reinsurance accounting system.

Key Responsibilities

• Complete complex reinsurance calculations in accordance with the Company’s accounting policies & procedures, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Statutory Account Principles (SAP) as assigned, ensuring completeness and accuracy as well as adherence to deadlines.
• Prepare monthly and quarterly external reporting per requirements.
• Perform account reconciliations, ensuring matching of the general ledger balance to source system and/or other documentation.
• Assists with reinsurance accounting research and projects as assigned.
• Will periodically be expected to work outside normal business hours, including weekends

Minimum Experience/Education

• Incumbent must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
• Two to four years of diverse insurance accounting experience with particular emphasis on property and casualty insurance and reinsurance accounting is preferred.
• Possess or working toward professional and/or Insurance Certifications is preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of Excel and other financial data query tools.

Communication And Collaboration Skills

Must be able to communicate, both verbally and in writing, complex reinsurance and accounting information in ways understandable to audiences of broadly varying levels of expertise.

Must be able understand and effectively respond to needs, concerns or questions of both internal associates and external contacts.

Problem Solving

Must be able to deliberately and thoroughly evaluate issues as they arise and, collaborating as needed, to reach and implement responsive, effective and compliant solutions.
