Unit Summary

Operating during regular business hours, the Surgical Ambulatory Care clinic at the Juravinski Hospital site provide resources and facilities for consultations, examinations, diagnostic tests, tissue specimens and therapeutic procedures; wound care; and blood specimen collection. Care is provided by an interdisciplinary team of Business Clerks, Clinical Clerks, Health Care Aids, Physician Specialists and Residents, Registered Nurses, and Registered Practical Nurses.

Position Summary

Nurses in the clinics provide client centered care and practice according to the professional standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario using the nursing process. Main nursing activities include assessment, anticipatory guidance, health teaching, application of asepsis and universal precautions to provide support and assistance to patients and clinicians during minor surgical procedures; procedure room turnover; instrument and tray set-ups; obtaining blood specimens and managing a range of tissue specimens; application of nursing principles and best practices in the care of patients. Stage III and Stage IV wounds. Performs other duties as assigned.

Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday; days

  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Current Certification in Wound Care, Asepsis, Blood Specimen Collection, CVAD, Medication Administration, CPR Basic Rescuer
  • Recent relative experience with urology and general surgery diseases and procedures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in wound care, venipuntures (IV, starts, blood collections, etc) and IV administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instruments, electro-cautery and equipment used in urology and day surgical

procedures

  • Demonstrated competence in applying principles of Universal Precautions and WHMIS
  • Demonstrated competence in using e-mail, database and appointment schedules software
  • Demonstrated ability to establish / maintain effective relationships as a member of the interdisciplinary Health Care team
  • Demonstrated leadership, ability to think critically, collaborate, communicate effectively, and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability in patient assessment skills, teaching and counseling.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work accordingly
  • Demonstrated delegation abilities and the ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care with members of the healthcare team
  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development and commitment to corporate initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to change in patient condition, urgent requests, and workload.
  • Physically able to lift, bend, push, and pull using good body mechanics
