Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly qualified Protection Team Leader.

About the job

Under the direct supervision of the Sub-Office manager, the technical supervision of the Protection Coordinator and in close coordination with other DRC teams, the Protection Team Leader is responsible for the smooth implementation of the DRC protection program in Attica region. Furthermore, the Protection Team Leader will be responsible for the day-to-day staff management and the management of the protection programming including but not limited to the community-based activities in the open accommodation facilities and the smooth operation of the DRC Helpline. (S)he will coordinate the Protection response in the relevant settings, develop and maintain good relations with the concerned populations, relevant stakeholders, and other humanitarian actors to support adequate implementation and coordination of DRC’s Protection activities. Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Provide guidance to the Protection teams, with the objective of timely delivery of services in a coordinated manner.
  • Support the timely identification of protection needs and develop appropriate response in line with DRC standards, guidelines, and SOPs.
  • Support identification of individual cases in need of further support and facilitate referrals or linkages with other service providers.
  • Lead, support and supervise community-based protection activities in site and urban setting focusing on women and children awareness, empowerment, and resilience building.
  • Ensure activities offered are age and gender appropriate taking into consideration cultural aspects as well as diversity and inclusion.
  • Ensure that attendance and participation of concerned populations is supported, motivated and that these groups are consulted for activities run by Protection team.
  • Facilitate two ways communication with POCs and participate in needs assessment including development of FGD guides, KII questionnaires, surveys and observation reports when needed while ensuring relevant information sessions are developed to fulfill information needs on rights and services of affected communities.
  • Coordinate and provide guidance with regards to the identification of extremely vulnerable cases, women, and children in need of further assistance or with special needs, for direct support and/or case management and appropriate referral to other actors for services.
  • Monitor that the Safe Spaces are well maintained, friendly to children and according to child safeguarding standards.
  • Ensure cooperation with other DRC teams.
  • Encourage a positive, innovative, and mutually supportive team spirit amongst the team under her/his responsibility.
  • Ensure the observance of the DRC Code of Conduct and SEA relevant reporting guidelines and standards throughout activity implementation.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Protection Manager, relevant to the achievement of Protection objectives in the refugee hosting sites and urban setting.

About you

To be successful in this role we would like for you to have :

  • Minimum 3 years professional work experience within national/international humanitarian/development work and specifically, in community-based protection activities and/or individual protection and case management
  • Solid experience in leading field teams is required (1 years minimum).
  • Project management experience is an asset
  • Good understanding of displacement issues of both internally displaced and refugees and related international standards/frameworks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations with local staff and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Excellent negotiation, advocacy, and communication skills. Ability to multitask and cope with competing demands under tight deadlines
  • Ability to cope with high workload and stress and identify priority activities and assignments, and adjust priorities as required. Ability to work in a demanding working environment.

Flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn from others

Education:

  • University degree in social /political sciences, social work, psychology, human rights, migration and refugee studies, or any other relevant field is required.
  • Post graduate education – Master’s level degree in a relevant field is an asset
