Project Manager (Training), Eastern Europe and Central Asia

BBC Media Action

As a member of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia country team, work with key internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement projects to agreed objectives and outcomes. This role expects to have a specific focus on the delivery of a broad range of training related and other capacity-strengthening activities supporting local media partners from across the region.

The Project Manager:

  • Ensures project delivery is on time and on budget, are legally and financially compliant and in line with the BBC’s editorial standards and approaches;
  • Plays a leading role in the delivery of training and related capacity-strengthening work to media partners in Eastern Europe;
  • In close collaboration with the BBC Media Action EDIT team, drives development and roll-out of BBC Media Action’s digital iLearn platform, ensuring effective engagement and buy-in from local media partners in Eastern Europe;
  • Liaises with donors and drafts reports to donors; manages key partner relationships; conducts and documents due diligence on relevant partners;
  • Sub-contracts consultants as required for delivery of the project;
  • Contributes to the articulation of a project’s theory of change and ensures that key research findings are fed into project design and delivery;
  • Contributes to business development, including proactively identifying and contributing new ideas, opportunities and partnerships which fit within the portfolio;
  • Interpret and establish training needs with beneficiary partners and develop training plans and build solutions using a range of delivery methods.
  • Be responsible for the production of any reporting documents required.
  • Ensure that all elements of training have clear outcomes, are regularly evaluated and demonstrate clear added value through the appropriate use of KPIs.
  • Analyse training evaluation data and implement changes to delivery as appropriate.
  • Support recruitment of freelance/staff trainers to ensure provision of online, face-to-face and virtual classroom training and monitor quality of their work.
  • Co-ordinate staff, suppliers, budgets and resources.
  • Ensure that all training delivered is fully accessible to all.
  • Comply with the BBC’s policy on diversity and to apply the principles of the policy when carrying out the role.
  • Complies with and ensures project compliance with BBC Media Action’s Safeguarding policy, and all relevant BBC safety rules, procedures and guidelines.

Essential skills/experience:

  • Experience of managing relevant projects to successful outcomes, including knowledge and experience of the project management cycle and how this applies to the context of international development.
  • Knowledge of the media development sector, with a proven track record in forming effective relationships with local partners;
  • Understanding of relevance of both linear broadcast and digital media in supporting a wide range of different audiences and their specific needs;
  • Experience in supporting capacity-strengthening activities for local media partners, and an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by local journalists;
  • Knowledge of current trends relating to information disorder and good practice that can strengthen digital media literacy;
  • Experience of working in Eastern Europe, with good understanding the different risks faced by the BBC in this context, as well as how to manage these risks effectively;
  • Knowledge of face-to-face and digital training approaches – able to match the most effective training delivery method to the training need.
  • Knowledge of editorial guidelines and their practical implementation.
  • An understanding of accessibility issues and a readiness to find solutions where necessary.
  • Experience of developing project proposals and reporting to donors.
  • Experience preparing, monitoring and managing budgets;
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to write well in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a proven track record in forming effective relationships with a range of local and international partners;
  • Ability to work remotely, including using online platforms such as Teams and Zoom to collaborate effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail. ·

Desirable skills/experience:

  • Experience at developing and articulating theories of change;
  • Experience identifying and engaging with potential donors, and of successfully winning new business;
  • Strong technical understanding of the communications for development sector, including media development and communications for behaviour and social change.
  • Experience of working with/in one or more country in Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova)
  • Fluent in a relevant language(s) spoken in Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Moldova)
