Chefs in Schools

£35,000 per year

Contract, 6 month fixed term, Full-time

We now have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, multi-skilled person to help The Hackney School of Food realise its full potential. This facility is a community cookery school with productive kitchen garden, set in the heart of Kings Park Ward in Hackney. This is a local community resource, committed to researching, refining and developing what works most effectively in cookery education – drawing from, and sharing with, others here in Hackney, nationwide, and abroad. Our aim is to share that knowledge freely: raising aspirations, and sharing the tools needed to succeed. It’s been created by the school food charity, Chefs in Schools, in partnership with the LEAP federation, with the aim of improving child health through food.

This is a great opportunity for someone with hands on experience of establishing a young charity, who shares our passion for our mission. Reporting directly to the Chair of the Hackney School of Food board, you will oversee establishment of a Community Interest Organisation, and work closely with the Chair & Head Chef Educator to develop and deliver a programme of courses that match our social purpose with the income needed to make the project sustainable.

This is a six month fixed term contract. There will be an option to extend or explore a more permanent position, dependent on the success of the initial phase.

Although this role does not involve delivering classes to children, you will be based primarily in an environment where children are also present, which may involve unsupervised contact. We take our responsibilities to safeguarding very seriously and you will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS clearance, provide a full history of employment and training, and complete safeguarding training.

You would be joining a friendly, supportive team who work hard, but believe in a healthy work / life balance. We offer 25 days holiday per year, Cycle to Work scheme, some opportunity for hybrid/home working, free weekly yoga class.

You’ll be the right person for this job if:

  • You have interest and passion for our mission
  • You are organised, methodical, strong on detail, able to map out deadlines and plan ahead
  • Ability to communicate effectively, to internal and external partners
  • You are able to forge links with our diverse local community
  • You have experience in:
  • Social enterprise/charity administration
  • Business planning and sales
  • Fundraising
  • Events coordination & management
  • You enjoy working with people
  • You see money as a tool to deliver the organisation’s mission
