Position Title : Project Assistant (Research Assistant for Migration, Business and Human Rights)

Classification : General Service Staff, Grade G-5

Type of Appointment : Special short-term graded, six months with possibility of extension

Context:

Under the overall supervision of the Programme Manager and under the direct supervision of the National Private Sector Engagement Officer, the incumbent will be responsible for providing technical and administrative support related to the implementation of capacity building activities on ethical recruitment for different supply chain actors in global supply chains.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Perform desktop research in the area of migration, business and human rights, laws and practices on responsible recruitment, country specific recruitment practices, due diligence, and remediation.
  • Collect and interpret data of potential and adverse risk related to recruitment in addition to country level risk analysis.
  • Assist in performing training needs assessments for global supply chain actors.
  • Contribute to the development of specialized and engaging training course materials for supply chain actors in different industries globally. This includes the development of slide decks and research work to produce relevant case studies.
  • Provide support in fixing errors in formulas and formatting of due diligence tools in excel that were affected during localization processes.
  • Participate in training to supply chain actors to develop and implement due diligence on ethical recruitment.
  • Support the delivery and roll out of training on responsible recruitment due diligence to the private sector, internal stakeholders, and Government counterparts.
  • Assist in monitoring supply chain actors’ progress and in providing technical support to address the challenges they raised.
  • Draft guidance notes, project updates, talking points, and briefing materials related to supplier capacity building and private sector engagement as directed by National Officer
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • High school diploma with five (5) years of relevant experience; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Social Sciences, Development Studies, Law, Sustainability, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Solid experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative research, preferably on migration, business, and human rights.
  • Experience in supporting sustainability-related projects from planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Experience in drafting regular status and progress reports.
  • Experience working with Government counterparts, UN agencies and/or non-governmental organizations is considered an asset.

Skills

  • Knowledge of local labour standards and international standards on business and human rights
  • Knowledge of labor migration and a broad range of migration related subject areas dealt with by the Organization.
  • Knowledge of ethical trading practices, management systems on labour rights, and due diligence on responsible business conduct
  • Knowledge of country and industry risks related to labour and human rights.
  • Strong quantitative business analysis skills, attention to detail, and high level of accuracy
  • Advanced or intermediate excel skills.
  • Strong communication skills

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English oral and written is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
