The International Secretariat of the FIDH is a human-sized organisation with a committed international team (49 employees in France, 20 employees in several offices abroad (Belgium, Geneva, The Hague, Bangkok, Tunis). Our Paris office is located in a lively and central area of Paris (near Bastille and Gare de Lyon).
We are recruiting : PROGRAMME MANAGER, AFRICA OFFICE (M/F) – 12-MONTH FIXED-TERM CONTRACT
Within the Operations and Programs Department (DOP) of FIDH and under the hierarchical responsibility of the Heads of the Africa Office, this position implements, in conjunction with the Member Organizations concerned, programs and actions in the Africa region. East Africa including the Sudan program.
Main tasks/responsibilities:
A. In charge of the implementation of the Sudan program
- Coordinate the actors (internal and external) involved in the project,
- Implement and monitor planned activities, including finance, communication, training, advocacy and analysis. Missions to Africa and Europe are planned,
- To contribute to the monitoring of the project, reporting and all other donor obligations.
B. Implementation of actions in other country situations and thematic areas in East Africa (including Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya)
- To ensure coordination with member organisations in these countries, with other actors and partners, and with the various FIDH departments,
- Monitor the human rights situation in each country,
- Ensuring and coordinating the drafting of whistleblowing, alert and information documents (press releases, letters to the authorities, urgent appeals, newsletters), draft investigation reports and position papers,
- Coordinating the translation and distribution of documents (by email, on the website and social networks or in hard copy), in consultation with the Press, Web and Communications offices,
- Participating in exchange meetings with local, regional or international partners, in line with FIDH’s priorities for action in the region,
- Participating in the reporting of the office’s activities and updating the monthly activity monitoring table (including the compilation of indicators and results), preparing activity reports,
- Responding to any press/media requests, including taking part in written and oral interviews as required,
C. Contribution to other office activities
- To ensure effective communication to and from the leagues and partners of the FIDH who are in contact with the office, with the aim of strengthening the link with them,
- In conjunction with the office managers, to ensure smooth and effective communication of information to BI/BE members and FIDH mission managers,
- Accompanying and supporting defenders and partners in the field (e.g. for their travels and meetings with States, IGOs, NGOs or for material or logistical support for their visits),
- Preparing fact-finding, judicial observation, advocacy, solidarity and workshop missions. Organise these activities (including preparing the terms of reference) and contribute to their follow-up,
- Ensures and monitors the preparation of written documents for the office (PCs, declarations, etc.),
- Participate in the training of trainees and volunteers,
- Help with day-to-day administrative and logistical tasks.
Profile required
- From 3 years’ professional experience, on taking up the post.
- Higher education in political science, international relations, human rights or international law.
- You have international experience, particularly in the East Africa/Horn of Africa region.
- Good knowledge of human rights issues and current affairs in Africa, particularly in Sudan and the Horn and East of Africa.
- Expertise in one of the following areas is a plus: women’s rights, justice mechanisms and strategic litigation, business and human rights, governance and the rule of law.
- Good oral and writing skills in French and English.
- Ability to work autonomously as a good team player, flexible, able to make proposals and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of Arabic and/or other languages of the region is a plus.
- Have a work permit for one of the countries/cities covered by the post

Terms and conditions of employment
12-month full-time fixed-term contract
Location: East Africa (Nairobi, Kampala) or Paris
All candidates must have existing work authorization for the location they apply for.
Remuneration: over 13 months, depending on experience and place of work
Teleworking possible with a minimum of 4 face-to-face days per month.
25 days’ paid holiday and 24 days’ RTT per year.

50% of transport costs covered
