Access Now

The Organization and Role

About Access Now

Access Now is a growing international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world, including issues of privacy, security, freedom of expression, and transparency. Our policy, advocacy, technology, and operations teams have staff presences in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), North America, and South/Southeast Asia, to provide global support to our mission.

About this role

The RightsCon Program Coordinator works within the RightsCon team, and across all Access Now teams, to support the development and execution of the program for the 2023 edition of the RightsCon Summit Series (www.rightscon.org), hosted in San José, Costa Rica and online. Program coordinators report through the RightsCon Program Manager, and work closely with the RightsCon team and production partners to establish, operationalize, and implement program processes, develop communications and resources for program contributors, and maintain a standard of excellence for community sessions hosted at the summit.

What you will do

Program support:

  • Coordinate all aspects of the Call for Proposals from submission to review to execution phase, and maintain clear internal documentation and references on program processes
  • Develop integrated work plans and timelines for program deliverables, and update project management tools, trackers, platforms, and calendars consistently and accurately
  • Elevate the production level for select community sessions to broaden reach and impact, and provide input into the curation of high production sessions hosted in the RightsCon Studio, which complement or intersect with regional and thematic priorities
  • Coordinate and execute online training, orientation, and networking opportunities for program contributors, and coordinate with external facilitators and production partners where needed
  • Provide dedicated support to organizers of hybrid and special production formats, such as private meetings and iterated online and in-person sessions, and work with the Operations and Partnerships Manager to establish production standards and needs for these formats

Data management:

  • Compile, clean, process, consolidate, and interpret Call for Proposals and program data for internal use, and conduct analysis and comparison based on key performance indicators
  • Process and delete session organizer data and other sensitive information in accordance with Access Now’s policies on privacy and data retention
  • Retrieve reports from the RightsCon proposal management system and other platforms where program data is stored to support relevant internal procedures, such as the diversity audit and Code of Conduct check
  • Transfer and convert data, such as Program Committee evaluation scores and comments, into consolidated dashboards for review, and streamline and integrate data collection platforms where possible
  • Standardize indicators based on RightsCon evaluation criteria to increase transparency into results and decision points of the Call for Proposals, and inform internal decision-making to strengthen the review process

Communications:

  • Serve as the first point of contact for session organizers, respond to all program requests through the RightsCon inbox in a timely manner, and escalate specific concerns where appropriate
  • Draft, prepare, schedule, send, and track communications to session organizers, Program Committee, and other contributors to the program
  • Draft and update content for program resources, guides, templates, toolkits, multimedia assets, and other materials to prepare session organizers for a hybrid environment
  • Develop and contribute to blogs, reports, newsletters, surveys, website and platform copy, and other public communications related to the RightsCon program
  • Support outreach to key stakeholders and strategic partners, and build connections with other networks and communities in order to advance the RightsCon vision of a diverse, relevant, and participatory program

Skills, education, and mindset you will bring

  • 1-3 years experience working on complex projects across different time zones
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to drive processes and timelines to meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills, able to liaise with many people from various backgrounds
  • Strong understanding of and appreciation for the key issues and challenges facing the internet and its users
  • Familiarity with data management, including basic analysis, comparison, and interpretation of trends and patterns
  • Unwavering attention to detail and high levels of organization
  • Passionate about the power of collective action and community-building to advance human rights
