Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project

The project:

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED material is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support the work of practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.

The role:

ACLED is recruiting a Senior Researcher for Nigeria. This position is fully remote and can be done from any location with reliable internet service. This is a part-time contractor position. The start date for this position is March 2023 and it will last initially until February 2024.

Specific roles and responsibilities:

(a) Work closely with the Analysis team to design an annual research agenda on Nigeria;

(b) Contribute to the drafting of analytical products and support the team’s analytical capacity;

(c) Provide expertise on Nigeria, including but not limited to:

  • Identifying gaps in the coverage of conflict activity (i.e. do ACLED trends reflect local realities);
  • Supporting the drafting of relevant methodology documents, as instructed by the Methodology and Data Management teams;
  • Identifying and liaising new partnerships especially with local conflict observatories, in collaboration with the Analysis, Data Management, and Programs teams.

(d) Engagement with donors, media, and users;

(e) Contribute to the organization of research events, including workshops and seminars;

(f) Participate in regular team meetings as necessary.

Skills and competencies:

ACLED is seeking applicants who have the following skills and experience:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Political Science/Social Sciences/Geography/Conflict Studies or other subjects relevant to this position;
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience working within a research environment;
  • Demonstrated expertise and research experience on governance and political violence in Nigeria;
  • Fluency in English is essential. Fluency in other relevant languages is a plus;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ACLED data;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong critical thinking, data analysis, and editing skills;
  • Familiarity with Tableau data analysis and visualization software a plus;
  • Ability to work remotely and meet deadlines with limited supervision (experience working in a remote environment preferred).
