Network Design Engineer

Remote – Successful candidate MUST live in a state in which Point Broadband operates (AL, FL, GA, MD, MI, OH, TN, TX, or VA).

Summary

The Network Engineer-Fiber is responsible for network planning and engineering of all broadband networks to include copper and fiber optic networks. The Network Engineer-Fiber will also be responsible for project management of major engineering initiatives as well as generating detailed engineering documentation to support the installation, configuration, and ongoing operations of the network.

Duties And Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Provide expert-level design and engineering for major infrastructure projects.
  • Perform engineering required to support customer service orders and serviceability requests.
  • Review department processes and procedures for efficiency and makes recommendations to senior management for improvements.
  • Maintain strong lines of communication with all staff, including management, independent contractors and field and office personnel, providing internal direction when necessary.
  • Participate in departmental budget discussions and provides guidance for cost savings.
  • Continuous review of departmental tools to ensure productivity.
  • Operate Auto-Cad, ArcGIS, and CrescentLink.
  • Researches new fiber mapping systems and makes recommendations to senior management.
  • Manages outside vendors, sources construction quotes and is integral to decision-making process for vendor selection.
  • Design and draft system maps with new Commercial, MDU and Residential developments.
  • Perform system design, create BOM and provide construction quotes for requested projects.
  • Provide updated system cable maps to all departments upon request.
  • Complete design, drafting and permit drawings as required.
  • Coordinates, reviews and approves of designs.
  • Creates and verifies work orders in alignment with budget requirements.
  • Approves all changes from the original work order including as-built changes, fiber assignment changes, and material changes.
  • Attends pre-construction and joint use utility meetings to ensure company plans meet local, city, and power company requirements.
  • Works in coordination with the Headend engineer to ensure quality of design and services.
  • Work with and maintain quality relationships with construction developers, contractors, and utility companies to ensure timely and accurate construction.
  • Provide advanced support for maintenance and troubleshooting of the OSP fiber optic network.
  • Participate in discussions and planning of network expansion to ensure efficient use of capital expenditures.
  • Participate in discussions and testing of new equipment and material.
  • Maintain professional attitude when in the community following the company’s guidelines for excellent customer service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to present technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to read street maps and system design prints

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous experience in the telecommunications industry, specifically with OSP fiber optics
  • Excellent organization, mathematical skills, and computer skills
  • AutoCAD related experience, within the cable industry is desired
  • Ability to multitask and handle numerous assignments simultaneously

Computer Skills

Word processing, spreadsheets, Internet software, email, AutoCad, database software.
