Context:

IOM’s Media and Communications Unit (MCU) is comprised of experienced communications professionals based in Geneva and Manila.

The team provides advice and support on media and public information issues to IOM Headquarters and missions worldwide. It is responsible for direct media relations with UN-accredited Geneva press corps and others, administers IOM’s global social media accounts and website and manages content submitted from around the world to be published on those global platforms, oversees institutional branding and initiates and manages global information campaigns.

MCU produces a wide range of print and audio-visual materials for a variety of audiences to enhance understanding of IOM’s work and its position as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, and to advocate on behalf of the rights of migrants worldwide.

Under the overall supervision of the Director, Media, and Communications Unit and the direct supervision of the Media and Communications Officer (Multimedia, the Media and Communications Officer (Photographer) will provide timely, professional photographic support services at Headquarters and IOM field locations.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Provide photographic coverage of IOM’s work, both at the Headquarters and country and regional offices.
  • Act as MCU’s Photo Editor, providing assistance in the management of incoming photography and the selection of images for public dissemination.
  • Proactively support MCU’s Newsroom by contributing suitably edited and impactful photo material for press releases, social media content, feature stories, and other public-facing content.
  • In close coordination with the HQ news team and the Multimedia Officer draft content packages to be shared with media.
  • Contribute to the development and/or update of user-friendly guidelines for the collection and post-production of photo content by IOM staff worldwide, and check compliance with the required use of digital informed consent via the Community Response App.
  • In close coordination with the On-Line Communications Unit in Manila provide timely guidance about the selection and development of impactful photo galleries, ensure that raw photo and video assets in the IOM Media Library are properly credited, captioned, tagged, and regularly updated, and that suitable archiving practices are applied.
  • Organize technical photography training for IOM staff at country and regional offices to help improve the quality of their photographic outputs.
  • Conduct research to help ensure IOM is at the forefront of the latest developments in humanitarian photography.
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Master’s degree in Media and Communications, Photography, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience or; • University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience

Experience

  • Proven ability to produce work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines;
  • Fluency in photographic recording, including both camera operation and operating strobe lighting;
  • Fluency in Photo editing software, such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop or CaptureOne

Skills

  • Excellent oral and visual communication skills, with an ability to produce photo captions accurately;
  • Proven ability to produce work precisely and concisely according to set deadlines.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and background verification and security clearances.
