Ambatovy Joint Venture operation in Madagascar, is recruiting an experienced Manager Environment to maintain Ambatovy’s environmental and social licenses to operate by ensuring that we meet our legal requirements and commitments in Madagascar as well as the international good practice standards we adhere to, either voluntarily or in accordance with numerous covenants.

The Role
The Manager Environment will lead a large team of employees and contracting services operations within the physical perimeters of the mine and plant, a large number are also focused outside of the fence and have a significant influence in safeguarding the reputation of the company. Designed to compensate for the loss of biodiversity at the mine and along the pipeline, one of the company’s obligations is to establish, maintain and supervise various conservation offset areas.
 
Responsibilities

  • Understand the HSEQ risks relevant to the environmental area of responsibility and ensure the use of the Ambatovy risk framework for management of issues. Be aware of and comply with relevant HSEQ legal and other requirements. Understand, communicate and comply with company policies and associated documentation.
  • Development of environmental policy and procedures: – assist senior company management to develop and implement appropriate environment policy and standard operating practices.
  • ISO14001 certification: – review and revise the existing environmental management system and certify this to the ISO14001 standard by Dec 2023.
  • Legal compliance: – working with Senior Legal Counsel, ensure that Ambatovy obtains relevant environmental permits from the Government of Madagascar for activities at the mine, plant, port, pipeline and TMF and provides routine monitoring and regular reports needed to maintain these.
  • Maintain the various conservation offset areas that were established to mitigate the disturbance caused through forest clearing at the mine and continue to operate in accordance with commitments made as a founding signatory of the Business and Biodiversity Offsets Programme (BBOP)
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with credible environmental organizations (local, national and international) to co-ordinate appropriate responses to environmental challenges and to safeguard Ambatovy’s national and international reputation.
  • Co-organize meetings of the independent Scientific Consultative Committee to review Ambatovy’s environmental and social programs at least once every two-years (and more often if required). 
  • Closure liability estimate: work with the Finance Department to ensure that the closure liability estimate is updated on an annual basis, and is regularly reviewed and maintained to ensure that it reflects changes in Ambatovy operations
  • Liaise with, and act as the key representative for all regional environmental affairs, including communication and relations with communities, local, regional and national authorities.
  • Participate in audits and inspections, as well as support the management of non- conformances, incident and corrective actions as required.
  • Carry out regular visits to Ambatovy sites to ensure adherence to policies and procedures, and implementation of relevant environmental plans. Such sites include the Mine, the Pipeline and valve station, the Plant, TMF and Port sites, the Soalara exploration prospect, the various conservation offset areas, and other places where activities may be carried out from time to time.
  • Drive implementation of agreed environmental improvement initiatives, specifically certification to the ISO14001 standard.

 
The Requirements

  • Master’s Degree Level in environmental sciences.
  • University Degree in Management, Hotel and Restaurant Management, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 15 years-experience in sustainability-related activities, half of which should be in a mining context.
  • People oriented, adaptable, resilient.
  • Highly regarded environmental professional, with expert level understanding of IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles, ISO14001 environmental management systems and Responsible Sourcing initiatives (LME / CIRAF / RMI)
  • Solid managerial skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain credibility with environmental staff as well as senior mine and plant operating staff, and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrate a visible on-site presence and commitment to implementation of strategy, policies, procedures systems, processes and interactions
  • Persuasive, persistent, and resilient
  • Understanding of and ability to work with various cultures,
  • Good information sharing and mentorship skills
  • Excellent written communications skills, including report writing
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills
