Job Summary

To support the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel to proactively assess legal risks and find solutions to help the organization accomplish its short and long-term objectives and ensure that the organization conducts business in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations

Your Impact And Job Responsibilities

  • Manages litigation and liability claims (including, but not limited to, detailed oversight of litigation logs, case strategy recommendations, claim reviews, loss trends and legal spend) for efficient resolutions
  • Manages and tracks the Liability Loss Fund
  • Works with Operations, Portfolio Management, and Capital in response to liability incidents and makes recommendations for further action based on a review of incidents
  • Oversees risk management software and coordinates and directs risk and safety training
  • Responds to and tracks discovery requests in litigation, including document requests and interrogatories
  • Reviews and responds to third-party subpoenas and warrants at both the corporate and site level and communicates efficiently with law enforcement
  • Participates on Waterton’s Risk Management Committee and assists the Associate General Counsel in evaluating best risk management practices and policies
  • Prepares schedules of pending litigation and other necessary documents in conjunction with annual audits
  • Assists with compiling insurance renewal documentation and review of insurance policy language and fund and loan insurance requirements
  • Assist in the execution of the department’s performance management goals and objectives.

What You’ll Bring- Desired Skills And Experience

  • High School Diploma Required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Current Paralegal Certification, preferably ABA approved; Illinois notary
  • 5+ years’ related litigation paralegal experience. Experience in litigation involving multifamily or other real estate preferred.
  • Some limited travel may be required, 10-20% based on business needs.
  • Must demonstrate professional integrity and exercise good judgment in handling sensitive information.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Skilled in determining whether tasks should be attempted, identifying the most effective way of completing the task, and preparing how to overcome unexpected difficulties.
  • Present ideas and information in a professional, concise and well-organized way.
  • Manage time well, correctly prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Ensure that both internal & external customer satisfaction is consistently obtained and maintained.
