Industry leader AFL’s Corporate Legal Department is currently accepting applications for a Summer 2023 Legal Intern. The Internship is a full-time, paid position open to rising 2L law school students. The Internship will commence on or about Monday, May 22, 2023, and end on or about Friday, August 11, 2023.

Job Description

The Legal Intern will be asked to perform a variety of tasks in support of the legal and compliance functions at AFL, as detailed below.

He/she will report to the General Counsel and must be able to handle sensitive matters with discretion and possess excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills. The position will offer opportunities to learn more about both AFL’s business and legal challenges; to interact with outside counsel and business people; to analyze and think creatively; and to make a real contribution to the work of AFL.

Internships May Include The Following Responsibilities And Opportunities

  • Analyzing state and federal laws and regulations to provide guidance on business questions and strategic initiatives.
  • Interpreting and implementing policies within the parameters of federal and state laws.
  • Participating on a team working to enhance and strengthen AFL’s compliance programs.
  • Participating on enterprise projects seeking to improve AFL’s processes in critical areas.
  • Participating on a team working to evaluate and protect AFL’s intellectual property and trade secret portfolio.
  • Providing limited administrative support to the Legal Department.

Core Responsibilities Include

  • Conducting legal and factual research and drafting memoranda.
  • Preparing legal analysis for submission to members of the company’s leadership team.
  • Attending and reporting on briefings, symposia, and other meetings.
  • Supporting Legal Department staff on presentations, projects and tasks as needed.
  • Maintaining complete confidentiality in all matters related to the Legal Department.
  • Adhering to and promoting the environmental, health & safety policies of AFL.
  • Performing other duties as requested, directed or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have completed at least one year of law school, including a Contracts course.
  • Excellent undergraduate and law school academic credentials.
  • Strong writing and communication skills and innovative problem solving skills – must be a critical thinker.
  • Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: employment law, corporate law, or international law.
  • Proactive work ethic, ability to juggle priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines in fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain and ensure strict confidentiality.
  • Extreme attention to details and high degree of professionalism and personal accountability.
  • Skilled in comprehending and analyzing procedural problems. Make sound recommendations and conclusions.
  • Ability to follow directions and exercise independent judgment and maintain a professional demeanor while managing tight deadlines and multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as a group member in an organized manner with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage tasks efficiently.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office in an office setting (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
