The Interpreter/Translator primarily responsibility is to provide simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpretation from Arabic to English and vice versa during mental health counseling, physiotherapy, and social work sessions in (small) groups or individually and (small) team meetings or training workshops. As a Translator the main responsibility is to provide English-to-Arabic and vice versa translation of clinical session’s materials, training materials, manuals and other documents.

80% interpretation, 20% translation

A. Key Responsibilities:

Interpretation (80%):

  1. Provide simultaneous, consecutive and liaison interpretation from Arabic to English and vice versa during mental health counseling, physiotherapy, social work sessions in (small) groups or individually, team/staff meetings, and training workshops. Simultaneous interpretation occurs while the speaker is still talking and it is usually used in large conferences. Consecutive interpretation occurs after the speaker has paused, usually sentence by sentence, and is more suitable for business settings and smaller meetings. Liaison is usually used for public service, such as in a hospital or legal setting, and the interpreter will check the listener understands after each sentence.
  2. Facilitate effective communication between two parties (Native proficient Arabic beneficiaries/staff and non-native international staff and visitors from the organization’s headquarters) that do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken or written language to another (Arabic to English and vice versa).
  3. Facilitate communication for people with limited English proficiency.
  4. Attend individual/group meetings and act as official Interpreter to mediate discussion.

Translation (20%):

  1. Convert written materials from English into Arabic and vice versa, such as clinical session’s materials, training materials, Manuals, researches, or administrative documents.
  2. Employ computer-assisted translation.
  3. Facilitate communication for people with limited English proficiency.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Clinical Services Coordinator in the implementation of CVT Jordan’s activities.

B. Minimum Criteria:

  1. A Bachelor degree in translation, English language or related field, with at least two years of proven record and work experience in solid interpreting and translating work.
  2. Familiarity with the humanitarian sector is required. Experience with international organizations is appreciated.

C. Qualifications:

  1. A background in social sciences or psychosocial work experience is preferable.
  2. Native proficiency in Arabic both written and oral.
  3. Near native proficiency in English both written and oral is required.
  4. Professional-level ability to translate English into Arabic, secondary ability to translate Arabic into English.
  5. Previous translation experience within a non-governmental working environment (human rights, mental health and advocacy language experience highly desirable).
  6. Good familiarity with website navigation tools and terminology in Arabic and English.
  7. Computer literate in Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  8. Familiar and comfortable with using technology where appropriate, such as microphones, headphones, telephones, video and the internet.
  9. Excellent attention to detail and ability to deliver timely and accurately.
  10. Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  11. Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  12. Excellent listening skills and communication skills
  13. Not afraid to work in somewhat challenging areas.
  14. Flexible and able to adapt to changing conditions, beneficiaries needs, and program needs.
  15. Able to maintain strict confidentiality.

D. GENERAL CONDITIONS:

  1. Is strictly committed to respect CVT’s confidentiality policy and to not disclose any information.
  2. Will use his/her best endeavors to prevent the disclosure by others any matters of a confidential nature to which they may be or become privacy because of this agreement.
  3. Self-Care: – Attend regular support, debriefing, case conferences, and/or supervision meetings to ensure information and skill-sharing.
  4. Set and follow through on a personal self-care schedule to avoid burnout and vicarious traumatization.
  5. Recognize and seek support when needed from internal and/or external resources to address concerns of secondary trauma in an expedient manner.
