Internship in Statistical Methods for Industrial Applications (80-100%)Take your next career step at ABB with a global team that is energizing the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future. At ABB, we have the clear goal of driving diversity and inclusion across all dimensions: gender, LGBTQ+, abilities, ethnicity and generations. Together, we are embarking on a journey where each and every one of us, individually and collectively, welcomes and celebrates individual differences.

The theoretical and computational methods group at the Swiss ABB research center develops, maintains, and improves models and numerical tools describing physical phenomena relevant to ABB products and technologies. These are used to support the development of next-generation products. In our group, we offer an internship position in the field of statistical methods for industrial applications. The focus of the internship will be the formulation of physical models, the evaluation, implementation, and assessment of different algorithms. During the internship you will be integrated in the Theoretical and Computational Methods Team, an international group of leading scientists and engineers.

Your Responsibilities

  • Combine modern statistical methods with physical models for several industrial applications
  • Develop suitable physical models that can be used within existing statistical frameworks
  • Explore different approaches to statistical inference to evaluate parameter of interest and their uncertainty, e.g., using Monte Carlo or variational methods
  • Implement those for use with existing ABB products
  • Evaluate the performance using available datasets

Your background

  • Enrolled student in physics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a related subject (advanced B.Sc. or M.Sc. level)
  • Good knowledge in statistical methods (Bayesian analysis is a plus) and data analysis
  • Good background in physics
  • Good skills in scientific programming, especially in Python
  • Availability for six months (start date from January 2024, but later start can be discussed)
