Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

The Media and Communications Division (MCD) of IOM is comprised of experienced communications professionals based in Geneva as well as various regional offices. The team provides advice and support on media and public information issues to IOM Headquarters and missions worldwide. It is responsible for media relations as well as producing a variety of other public information materials, including official statements to mark special events, information folders, fact sheets and press briefing notes on specific IOM activities for both online and offline communications outlets.

The social media team is responsible for ensuring that IOM’s work is visible across different social media platforms.

Supervision

The Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Social Media Officer.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in curating and updating campaign Trello Boards for the different international days.
  2. Assist in ensuring that content is shared in a timely manner on IOM social media platforms.
  3. Assist in the development of a social media campaign strategies for different social mediaplatforms that IOM is active on.
  4. Assist in the coordination of the development of social media content.
  5. Compile social media analytic reports showing the performance of different IOM social mediacampaigns.
  6. Develop and implement concepts for new social media campaigns on Instagram and TikTok.
  7. Assist in the scheduling of social media content.
  8. Assist in researching current social media trends that can be used to boost IOM’s social media presence.
  9. Develop scripts for Instagram and Facebook reels.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisors.

Training Components and Learning Elements

  • The Intern will gain experience working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
  • Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration.
  • The Intern will acquire valuable technical knowledge by helping to develop and implement social media campaigns for a prominent UN agency.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field of study related to Migration, Communication, Marketing, MediaStudies or other relevant Social Sciences. (e.g. Humanitarian Affairs, Development Studies, Political Science, International Relations or a related field) from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

  • Practical experience in multi-tasking, prioritizing, and working independently.

Skills

  • Good knowledge and understanding of migration issues;
  • Excellent research, writing, communication and analytical skills;
  • Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written);
  • Knowledge and understanding of how social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Instagram work;
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to use social media analytics to improve campaign performance;
  • Knowledge on working in digital communications and social media production;
  • Knowledge of how to use social media tools such as Trello, Hootsuite, Agora Pulse andBrand24;
  • Solid understanding and interest in migration, development, communication and/or humanitarian issues;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Excel, Word and PowerPoint);
  • Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and consistently according to set deadlines.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of other official IOM language is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

  1. have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies, or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/nongovernmental institutions and/or academia to work inspecific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme(minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months; e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
