Indigenous Employee Engagement Coordinator – Indigenous Peoples Summer Student Opportunity

1 temporary summer opportunity from May to August

The Indigenous Peoples summer opportunity program falls within the Indigenous Peoples recruitment strategy, which outlines the City’s commitment to recruit Indigenous Peoples to our workforce.

This role supports the Program Management Team in the Organizational Design and Development Branch of the Employee Services Department. Specifically, the role will support the work of the Employee Survey staff.

In this role, you will create presentations for a variety of stakeholders based on survey responses from employees who have self-identified as Indigenous, to help articulate what we know about the Indigenous employee experience at the City of Edmonton. You will work with current and historical survey data to identify trends over time for Indigenous employees. Time permitting, you may also work on a communication plan to encourage Indigenous employees at the City to self-identify in an upcoming survey to help the City, as an employer, provide a positive experience for Indigenous employees.

Your Duties Will Include

  • Contributing to or leading basic data analysis for employee survey responses
  • Conducting research and analysis, synthesizing results
  • Creating presentations for a variety of stakeholders with unique communication objectives
  • Contribute to or lead the development of a communication plan to increase participation in the employee survey by Indigenous employees
  • Connecting with City staff in a variety of roles for their input on deliverables
  • Participating in planning meetings
  • Presenting findings to a variety of stakeholders

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in Degree program in Social Sciences, Native Studies, Business, Social Work, Community Development, Political Science and/or Public Administration, Communications, and or related field of study, with at least 2 years of your program completed
  • An interest in communicating social sciences research findings to stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas and concepts effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Basic data analysis skills
  • Proficiency with software such as Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

This position may be partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs Program provided by Service Canada.

  • Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered:
    • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
    • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Priority will be given to applications from candidates who self-identify as being part of underrepresented groups or as having additional barriers to entering or staying in the labour market as outlined below:
    • New immigrant / refugee youth (new is defined as having arrived in Canada in the past 5 years)
    • Indigenous youth
    • Youth who have not completed high school
    • Visible minorities / racialized youth
    • LGBTQ2 youth
    • Women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
    • Youth who have not previously been employed and for whom this would be their first job experience
    • Youth with disabilities

  • Currently enrolled and returning to school or a Post-Secondary Institution in the fall
  • Applicants must be Metis, First Nation or Inuit

Hours of Work: 40 Hours per week, Monday – Friday

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $19.749 – 25.135 (Hourly)
