ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews seeks a Finance and Accounting Manager. The Finance and Accounting Manager will manage financial reports and expenses and will ensure that proper financial procedures are in place and upheld according to Internews’ policies and in compliance with local regulations. The Finance and Accounting Manager will also perform legally required accounting for the organization individually or in partnership with an externally contracted certified accountant. They will perform duties related to the payroll of Internews staff employed in Hungary. The Finance and Accounting Manager will prepare required periodic reports as per the organization’s policy and will report to the Project Directors.

This is a full-time limited-duration position, with an expected end date of September 30, 2025.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • Prepare monthly financial reports for Internews’ international accounting system.
  • Liaise with an outsourced accounting firm to complete mandatory accounting duties and reporting to local authorities in line with local regulations.
  • Monitor program accounting and documentation to ensure compliance with funder requirements and Internews’ policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate accounting entries to the HQ accounting system, including accounts payable, petty cash, vacation accruals, and general accounting entries; will process payments upon request.
  • Act as a cashier, prepare/review wire transfer requests, and prepare/review and control/oversee Expense Reimbursement Forms.
  • In coordination with an outsourced accounting firm, fulfill all payroll administration duties of Internews staff employed in Hungary, including salary payment, payment of income taxes and social security contributions; liaise with the outsourced accounting firm on necessary paperwork and prepare payroll upload files for Internews’ accounting system.
  • Coordinate and maintain a cash forecasting system to ensure adequate funds are available to meet program requirements.
  • Monitor ongoing levels of expenditure on individual programs against the budget and advise of likely over- and under-spending in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that contractual commitments (e.g., office space lease) are expressed in forms appropriate for the circumstances of the program.
  • Manage bank accounts and local transfers and payments to suppliers/staff through the bank account.
  • Ensure all national and international staff have valid contracts and local work and transports permits.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations with respect to financial and other matters (e.g. foreign exchange, taxation, and labor laws).
  • Enforce Internews Personnel Manual, Code of Conduct, and other official Internews guidelines.
  • Follow Internews’ guidelines on data security.
  • With Project Directors’ approval, provide technical coordination and advice to other departments. Advise Grants manager as requested by Project Directors on issues related to subgrantee financial reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned by Internews management.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Required

  • Three years of relevant professional experience, including progressively responsible experience in financial management of projects
  • University degree in finance, accounting, or a closely related field or equivalent lived/professional experience.
  • Intermediate expertise in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Professional proficiency in Hungarian and English.
  • Knowledge of tax and accounting legislation in Hungary.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work with sensitive data and confidential information.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as an effective team member.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and handle multiple ongoing assignments, set priorities, and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Three or more years of accounting experience
  • Hungarian accounting accreditation.
  • Familiarity with SAP or Oracle platforms.
  • Experience with nonprofit organizations.
  • Experience working with specific accounting software.
  • Familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP
