Girls Not Brides is the only global organisation uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child marriage and ensuring that this movement leads to tangible change for the girls at risk or affected by the practice. INTRODUCTION TO THE ROLE

We have an exciting Maternity cover opportunity for a Head of Development and Outreach. Based in Girls Not Brides’ London secretariat, you will report to the Chief Executive Officer and work closely with colleagues from various teams, as well as with the Girls Not BridesBoard and external stakeholders.

The successful individual will lead the Development and Outreach Team, ensuring the diversification of Girls Not Brides’ income streams and strengthening of the secretariat’s visibility, partnerships and profile. This role will include considerable work with government, foundation and multilateral donors, as well as potentially supporting Girls Not Brides to launch strategies for new sources of income. Overseeing the organisation’s relationships with existing and prospective donors and other strategic partners, the Head of Development and Outreach will also support the CEO’s external engagements. We are looking for an experienced and effective fundraiser and leader with a strong track record of developing outreach and income generation strategies, excellent knowledge of the international development funding landscape, and impeccable relationship building, team management and communication skills.

Salary range

£51,000 per annum. Girls Not Brides also offers a generous 10% pension.

Contract

9-12 months fixed-term contract. The successful candidate must have the right to work in the United Kingdom at the time of applying, and for at least 12 months ahead*.*

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Team leadership

  • Lead the Development and Outreach Team and support team members’ ongoing performance and development.
  • Define and oversee the Development and Outreach Team’s workplan and budget (with certain budget areas sitting with the CEO).

Fundraising and donor relationships

  • Lead the development, implementation and review of Girls Not Brides’ fundraising strategy, and working closely with the CEO, Head of Finance, Board and Senior Leadership Team to raise and diversify income and strengthen funding partnerships.
  • Lead organisation’s overall income analysis and projections for future years.
  • Make recommendations to the CEO in relation to funding decisions, and sign off documents for donors.
  • Develop, implement and review donor and funding related partnerships and approaches to increase funding for the wider sector working to end child marriage.

Development, outreach and visibility

  • Support the CEO to develop, implement and review strategy and approaches to build the secretariat’s visibility, partnerships and profile.
  • Oversee a calendar of events and communications to position Girls Not Brides and the CEO and to build our partnerships and visibility, including by supporting the CEO’s external engagement.
  • Represent Girls Not Brides externally and further cultivate Girls Not Brides’ network of external stakeholders.

Governance and risk management

  • Support the CEO in reporting to the Board on matters pertaining to fundraising, development and outreach.
  • Support and work with the Board’s fundraising sub-committee.
  • Work with the CEO to monitor and mitigate risks related to fundraising.

Broader leadership responsibilities

  • Contribute to the implementation of the secretariat’s overall strategy and the secretariat’s positioning and external voice.
  • Provide technical expertise in the advisory and management team.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential experience

  • Significant professional experience in a similar senior-level role in the not-for-profit sector, an international/intergovernmental organisation, a social movement or social and enterprise.
  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant area, or proven experience in a related field plus extensive relevant professional training.
  • Experience of leading the development of effective prospecting, grant fundraising and income generation strategies and related efforts aimed at diversifying funding streams.
  • A strong track-record of cultivating new partnerships with institutional donors (particularly governments/ foundations and multilateral donors) and of planning, writing, and submitting successful funding proposals for private foundations and/or governments.
  • Experience of working across disciplines, building successful relationships with colleagues, donors, and a range of different strategic partners.
  • Experience of successfully managing teams, including geographically dispersed staff.

Essential skills and knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of the fundraising landscape and trends relating to gender and/or youth/child rights in an international context, including an understanding of key actors and donors in these fields.
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills and ability to appraise options and adapt plans as required, with an ability to deal with competing demands, multiple priorities, time constraints and unanticipated events.
  • Strong project, technical and budget management skills, planning, reporting and monitoring and evaluation skills.
  • Impeccable written and verbal English communication skills, with strong ability to write effective and compelling grant narratives, and synthesise information for a range of audiences.
  • Confident networker and influencer with the ability to represent Girls Not Brides at external events.
  • Highly skilled people manager who can effectively line-manage, support and promote staff development.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of actors from different cultural contexts, including interacting with high-profile stakeholders in a discreet and professional manner.

  • Proactive and able to confidently take initiative and make appropriate decisions.
  • Willingness to work flexibly and regularly travel internationally, as necessary.

Desirable

  • Experience working within thematic areas of child marriage and other harmful practices, girls’ education, SRHR and related fields.
  • Proficiency in additional languages, such and French and Spanish, is an added advantage.
  • Experience with additional types of fundraising, including through high-net-worth individuals, Corporate Social Responsibility, etc.
