Organization summary and objective: 

Rural Action is a membership-based nonprofit working in the southeastern and central eastern counties of Appalachian Ohio since 1991. Our mission is to develop the region’s economy in socially, environmentally and economically sustainable ways. 

Rural Action has a network of over 600 members throughout Appalachian Ohio. The organization is governed by a Board from across southeast Ohio, with strong private sector involvement. The Board oversees a CEO who manages a growing staff (currently 50), 10 AmeriCorps VISTAs and 31 AmeriCorps state and national members, with plans for growth of the service Corps, plus contractors and interns. Rural Action members are involved as volunteers, participants, decision makers, and project designers. Our members guide our sustainable development work in Appalachian Ohio.

Job Summary:

The Grants Accountant works under the direction of the Finance Director to manage accounting and internal controls for the organization, including preparing internal and external financial statements for grant and contract reporting and invoicing, managing insurance, grant portals and corporate documentation. The Grants Accountant will work with the management team to ensure accurate and timely information for the smooth operation of Rural Action. 

Salary range for this position is $42,000 – $50,000 based on experience

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain accurate books for the organization
  • Prepare Accounts Receivable journal entries, to include imports from the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, other sales transactions and direct entry of payments received for invoices or grants
  • Assist with all financial reporting needed for the annual audit

  • Manage grant financials in concert with Chief Program Officer (CPO) and Program Directors, to include:
  • Maintain Master Grant List in collaboration with CPO 
  • Produce reports as needed by management and by program staff
  • Prepare grant and contract related financial statements
  • Assist programs with monitoring financial progress on grants and create budget v. actual reports as needed 
  • Lead financial set-up of grants: determine period of performance, reporting dates, and class / project / program identification (PPID) tracking
  • Manage accounts receivable for Rural Action, to include:
  • Maintain organizational access to all grant portals for state, federal, and private funders for reporting and invoicing;
  • Prepare deposits and process cash receipts batches for each bank account
  • Prepare grant invoices immediately following the grant period
  • Work with CPO to manage grant billing schedule
  • Ensure collection of grant payments in a timely manner to support the cash flow schedule
  • Process grant and invoice payments with proper and accurate coding

  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Passion for rural communities and community development;
  • Knowledge and experience in accounting, specifically billing and accounts receivable;
  • Financial management and tracking;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs, in particular MS Excel;
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online
  • Organized and efficient; 
  • Problem solving and analysis;
  • Ability to listen with empathy;
  • Comfortable with conflict management;
  • Project Management and organizational skills

Required education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field or equivalent experience/education;
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills;
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
  • Knowledge of basic Microsoft programs;
  • Knowledge of Google suite of products (Gmail, sheets, docs, calendar, etc.)
  • Ability to work at a computer for several hours at a time;
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred education and experience:

  • 5 years relevant professional experience

Position type and expected hours:

This is a full-time, exempt position, with regular work hours to be completed Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties and deadlines demand.
