The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy and action research organisation promoting sustainable development and linking local priorities to global challenges. The Initiative for Effective Adaption and Resilience (LIFE-AR) is an LDC (Least Developed Countries) led and owned initiative with the objective of developing long-term climate adaptation delivery mechanisms that enable investment behind local priorities, strengthening national institutions, domestic systems and capabilities, and influencing the climate finance architecture to improve LDCs ability to access climate finance for transformational adaptation. IIED is currently acting as the ‘interim’ Secretariat for LIFE-AR.

We are now looking for a Governance Advisor to join us on a full-time basis for a two year fixed-term contract, working 35 hours per week.

The Role

As a Governance Advisor, you will provide technical advice and leadership to the LIFE-AR Secretariat team, supporting strong, LDC-led governance of the LIFE-AR initiative.

Working closely with the Head of Governance, LDC Chair and LIFE-AR Technical Lead, you will guide the core management and oversight of the initiative. You’ll ensure our strategy is up-to-date, drive innovation and support the effective functioning of the LIFE-AR Platform.

Supporting LIFE-AR’s engagement and influence of wider stakeholders, you’ll utilise learning and innovation from the initiative to provide technical leadership for our fundraising and communication strategies.

Additionally, you will:

– Support the transition to a LIFE-AR Facility and the Secretariat relationship with the LIFE-AR Board
– Implement a clear, inclusive transition plan from IIED to the LIFE-AR Facility
– Lead the delivery of bi-annual LIFE-AR events
– Prepare high-quality briefings, presentations and any other documentation
– Assist with the LIFE-AR Board financing strategy

About You

To be considered as a Governance Advisor, you will need:

– Experience of collaborative, inclusive and transparent governance models, decision-making processes and meaningful stakeholder engagement
– Experience of climate adaptation and resilience and relevant development fields
– Experience of working with LDC governments
– Experience of leading large-scale initiatives on climate adaptation and resilience
– Experience of leading with diversity, equity and inclusion, with strong knowledge of decolonisation and anti-racist practice
– An understanding of ‘business unusual’ i.e., innovation in ways of working in climate adaptation and resilience
– An understanding of approaches to build capabilities in LDC’s own institutions
– Excellent interpersonal, negotiating and influencing skills
– Fluency in English (verbal and written)
– An advanced degree in a relevant discipline or commensurate experience

IIED is a hybrid working organisation and you are likely to be working from home most of the time. As such, you will need a suitable place to work and a reliable, fast internet connection.

Please note, this role is also open to those who live outside the UK, as long as you have the right to work in the country you wish to reside in.

The salary range advertised in GBP is applicable in the UK only, and the salary offer in another country would depend on the local terms and conditions. We only use the UK salary structure to determine starting salaries, but it will not apply to salaries outside the UK thereafter.
