The British Red Cross is now seeking to recruit two Logistics specialists to join our Global Surge Team and provide immediate technical capacity to field operations.

This role increases our capacity to provide assistance at short notice in the area of Logistics to Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (RCRCM) activities, during any stage of the Disaster Management Cycle. This is done through a combination of operational deployments and capacity building activities.

What you’ll be doing…

  • Provide technical Logistics support to response, recovery and capacity building operations undertaken by the RCRCM, including development of the Logistics Plan of Action (PoA) and coordination and management of logistics operations. Depending on the context and operational requirements, this support will be provided through field deployments and/or remotely.
  • Determine, implement, monitor and review the Logistics strategy and Logistics PoA.
  • Coordinate, pro-actively schedule and manage the supply chain and logistics support (including delegates) for the operation(s), including requisitioning, receiving, storing, issuing goods and logistics support to cash based intervention.
  • Provide supervision and direction to the operation’s procurement systems in coordination with Regional Logistics Units (RLUs), zone offices or country/regional/head quarter offices regarding best sourcing options.
  • Facilitate or support the delivery of BRC, ICRC, or IFRC capacity building activities in Logistics and contribute to the revision or development of new training curricula. Where requested, provide mentoring support to other BRC delegates and staff.

This is a home based role which will require overseas travel for up to 3 months at a time. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there may be a requirement to undertake remote deployments.

What you’ll bring to the role…

You will be prepared to deploy at short notice into countries experiencing natural disasters and other crisis events. Strong technical skills, and ability to operate with limited resources and a willingness to work in a complex multi-cultural environment with a variety of stakeholder are essential.

You will have experience in developing and implementing full range of logistics activities including: assessment, developing and implementing PoA, logistics support to cash based interventions, procurement, contracting, transport management, warehouse management, stock control, distribution, fleet management, custom clearance, budget management, and setting & reporting key performance indicators.

You will have good knowledge and understanding of humanitarian responses, the actors involved, and the role of evidence-based decision making upon the delivery of humanitarian action.

You will have international experience, ideally within an emergency response context.

About the team

The Global Surge Team is part of the Emergencies Team in the International Directorate of the British Red Cross, made up on highly trained professionals ready to be deployed anywhere in the world at short notice. The Global Surge team provides surge capacity to the whole of the RCRC Movement. This surge capacity is utilised throughout the whole Disaster Management Cycle (Disaster Risk Reduction, Disaster Preparedness, Emergency Response and Emergency Recovery). We support when and where there is a need to provide immediate capacity both to the Movement field operations and to BRC’s programmes at short notice and on deployments of up to three months.

As a member of the International Directorate you will be part of a directorate responsible for BRC’s international humanitarian response and disaster management, support to resilience programmes and organisational development of our partner Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the world. The work of the International Directorate also includes humanitarian policy and advocacy activities and upholding and promoting International Humanitarian Law. British Red Cross’ international work is carried out in coordination and partnership with the International Red Cross & Red Crescent Movement.
