BACKGROUND

The Alcon-sponsored initiative “Building Extraordinary Human Resources: a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Road Map” aims to integrate an equity roadmap for women and the field of ophthalmology, as well as gender-based analysis within all programs at Orbis International.

The Gender Mainstreaming Consultant will serve with full-time availability, for 3 months, as the lead in the elaboration of gender mainstreaming strategies for the LAC Region. As such, the Consultant will regularly coordinate with Orbis’s Latin America and Caribbean Team as well as in-country partners and project stakeholders in Bolivia and Peru. The successful consultant is based in Bolivia or Peru and should be able to start on the 1st of October 2022.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. Conduct gender training and adapt gender training materials

  • Adapt gender training materials to the regional context of Latin America for training Orbis LAC staff. Adapted materials must be gender sensitive and meet the gender-responsive programming needs of Orbis.
  • Convene and facilitate gender training workshops in person or via digital platforms.
  • Adapt gender training materials for Orbis partners in the region, such as the National Institute of Ophthalmology’s staff in Bolivia and Peru, for activities in 2023.

2. Gender-based analysis and gender mapping.

  • Conduct and document gender-based analyses about the program design process of LAC’s portfolio, with a focus on the community level.

3. Engagement with the Gender Champions.

  • Liaise with Orbis International’s Gender resource persons and consultants.
  • Support activities led by LAC Gender Champion.
  • Attend and support the convening of the Gender Champions’ Technical Working Groups.
  • Attend events related to gender topics.
  • Support OI headquarters’ teams with gender initiatives, including giving feedback on content, tools, materials, budgets, etc.
  • Report active engagement and activities to Project Coordinator, Bolivia, and Senior Program Manager LAC, in monthly reports.

4. Stakeholder management.

  • When applicable, build partnerships and relationships with external stakeholders on gender initiatives.
  • Regular coordination and meetings with Orbis’ partners, LAC Team, and project stakeholders.
  • Schedule and participate in other online and in-person meetings.
  • Facilitate a mapping of potential/future partners and stakeholders in the gender sphere, in both Bolivia and Peru, particularly of civil society.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s Degree level in International Cooperation for Development, Gender Studies, International Relations, Education, or related fields, desired.
  • Bachelor’s Degree level in Political Sciences, Law, Business Administration, Communications, or related fields, required.
  • Completed gender training.
  • Aware of globally recognized gender best practices.
  • Experience facilitating workshops using participatory methodologies.
  • Proven 3 years of working experience in gender-related positions and gender integration in programs and projects for development.
  • Proven 5 years of general working experience.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Spanish Native speaker with English full proficiency (Level C2).
  • The ability to interact effectively in person and in writing with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent organizational & planning skills.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and manage a broad spectrum of detail-oriented responsibilities with an appropriate sense of urgency/importance.
  • Strong digital skills. Experience with online research.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • High degree of computer literacy (Windows 11 OS, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and the Internet).
