Human Rights Legal Project

HRLP is seeking a Fundraising and Communications Officer

Location: Samos / Remorte

Position Type: Remote and Part-time (21 hours per week / 3 days)

Contract Type: 6 months consultancy, with possibility to extend subject to funding

Start Date: As soon as possible

Reporting To: Legal Coordinator and Board

Organisational Context

The Human Rights Legal Project (HRLP) is a legal aid organisation based on Samos working to uphold the fundamental rights of displaced people at the borders of the European Union (EU) by providing legal assistance to affected communities, and by pursuing strategic legal action to hold authorities accountable to their international obligations under the Geneva convention and IHL.

HRLP was founded as a joint initiative of individual humanitarian workers in 2020, with the primary purpose of representing asylum-seekers and refugees who have suffered human rights violations in Greece, and along the border.

The work of HRLP is innovative and unique in the Greek context, in that the organisation is working to transform the policies and systems that create barriers for displaced people to seek asylum and receive due process.

Purpose of the Role

HRLP is a small organisation, challenging big power. We are politically and financially independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. We work with a small number of principled partners, and this fiscal independence allows us to continue our work with integrity and act in full accordance with our values. The Fundraising and Communications Officer will work with the legal team to secure funding sources for the stability of the organisation, and enhance the visibility of HRLP’s work across our online channels.

Responsibilities

Reporting to a Fundraising and Comms Task Force (staffed by the Board and the Legal Coordinator), this individual will work to develop the visibility of our work in order to secure additional funding. Primary tasks will include:

  • Use the database of relevant grant opportunities, foundations, philanthropists, and other charitable donors to draft and submit grant applications and ad hoc proposals.
  • Establishing and maintaining pathways for individual donor care, including direct email campaigns and mailing lists.
  • Working with the Board to devise strategies for long-term fundraising.
  • Managing the social media channels of the organisation (currently LinkedIn and X) and establishing an Instagram presence.
  • Maintaining the website, so that it is a live site, with current information and updates about our legal work.
  • Providing communications support to high-profile cases.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Motivated self-starter, who is able to work autonomously and as a part of a group as a team player. Someone with strong communication and collaborative skills, and who is able to navigate the remote work environment.
  • Previous experience in communications, for example, managing social media outputs, crafting messaging, and maintaining a website.
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to work and manage timelines.
  • Previous experience working in a human rights or humanitarian NGO.
  • Strong command of the English language.
  • A deep understanding of the situation for displaced people and NGOs in Greece, including experience spent working in Greece or with a project associated with Greece.
  • A strong understanding of ethical communications, including a decolonised, anti-racist approach to communicating about human rights work, partners, and clients.
  • An understanding of the work and role of grassroots NGOs, and a steadfast commitment to social justice and a rights-based approach.

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Previous experience in fundraising, grant writing and/or donor management, with knowledge of the donor space.
  • Experience working in the human rights or migration space, and ideally in the Greek context.
  • Additional language skills, in particular Greek, Arabic, Farsi, or French, are not a requirement, but would be considered an advantage.

Compensations and Benefits

  • €780 (gross) monthly income for 21 hours/three-day week

  • 20 days annual leave pro rata, plus public holidays.

How to apply

Please send a CV and Cover Letter to the below email address, outlining how you meet the criteria listed above and how your experience is relevant to HRLP: [email protected]. Applications will close at 17:00 (Greek time) on February 20th 2024, but please do note that applications will be considered on a rolling basis, and we will move forward once we find a suitable candidate – early application is advised

We particularly welcome applications from individuals with lived experience of migration.

We look forward to hearing from you!
